Important Traffic Safety Reminder for Parents and Students
With the days getting shorter and weather conditions becoming unpredictable, it’s crucial to remind our students about staying safe on their way to and from school. Recently, a student had a close call with a vehicle, reminding us all of the importance of being extra cautious.
Here are a few key tips to help students stay safe while walking to school:
1. Use Crosswalks: Always use designated crosswalks and wait for the pedestrian signal before crossing. Avoid crossing between parked cars or jaywalking.
2. Stay Alert: Students should avoid distractions like cell phones or headphones while walking near traffic. Being aware of their surroundings is key to staying safe.
3. Wear Bright or Reflective Clothing: As it gets darker earlier, wearing bright or reflective clothing can help drivers see students more clearly. Consider attaching reflective strips to backpacks or jackets.
4. Make Eye Contact with Drivers: Before crossing the street, students should make sure they’ve made eye contact with drivers to ensure they’ve been seen.
5. Walk on Sidewalks: Whenever possible, students should use sidewalks. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic and stay as far to the side of the road as possible.
6. Be Cautious in Poor Weather Conditions: Rain, fog, and icy conditions can make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians and slow down their reaction times. Encourage students to be extra careful in these conditions.
7. Walk in Groups: When possible, encourage students to walk with friends or in groups. There’s safety in numbers, and they’re more visible to drivers.
By practicing these safety tips, we can help ensure that all our students arrive at school and return home safely. Let’s work together to make our community safe for everyone.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter!
We are excited to announce the launch of our Student Leadership Club! This is a fantastic opportunity for students to get involved in shaping the future of our school, develop leadership skills, and make a positive impact in our school community. Mr. Middleton will be the teacher sponsor, and meetings will be held on Tuesdays during the school day.
If you're interested in joining or want to learn more, please see Mr. Middleton. All students are welcome!
Attendance
We ask parents/guardians to call the school before 9:00 am at (250) 245-3351 or email Info.LI@sd68.bc.ca to notify the school of your child’s absence. Please follow up with a note to your child’s teacher when your child returns to school so the teacher can address any missed work, homework issues, etc. Also a reminder that if students need to leave early, they should be signed out in the main office.
School Closure
The following is a reminder about the NLPS school closure procedure for students.
If schools are closed due to snow, or any other weather-related problems, announcements will be made on local radio stations (WOLF 106.9 FM, WAVE 102.3 FM, and 91.7 COAST FM) by 7 a.m., or earlier, on the day of the closure. Please do not call the radio station – tune in and listen for the announcements, which will be made on a regular basis.
In addition, the district will post the information on the district’s website, Twitter, Facebook, and mobile app. Families may also receive a message through the School Messenger notification system via phone, email, or text. Please keep in mind, however, that there may be situations where this is not always possible, for example, power outages or technical problems. The most reliable method is to listen to the local radio stations.
