July 2023
LISD Families,
The first day of school is right around the corner! I am so excited to see the hallways of our schools filled with learners so soon. Last week we welcomed campus administrators back to campus, and like me they are eager to meet all of you and get this year started. It’s going to be a great one!
In this newsletter you’ll find important information to prepare your family for the year ahead. The LISD.net/BackToSchool webpage will be updated by July 25 to include all of the paperwork and resources you might need to get your students set up for success this year, and we’ll continue to share information with you as we get closer to August 9.
This webpage is also accessible through the LISD app, which I hope all of you will download to stay better connected to our district. More information on how to download the app can be found below!
I hope you’ll watch my video message, where I share some important legislative information including updates to TEA’s school rating system and the new safety and security procedures outlined in House Bill Three. As I’ve mentioned in my previous updates, the lack of progress in the most recent legislative session has left LISD in a 49 million dollar deficit for the 2023 budget year.
While this is extremely disappointing, I am encouraged by the work of the Board of Trustees to consider all possible solutions to relieve the financial constraints our district is faced with. Considerations include a Voter-Approved Tax Ratification Election, also known as a VATRE, and a potential Bond referendum. I discuss both of these in my video, and hope you’ll take the time to watch and educate yourself on the importance of these prospective solutions. We need all of you to join us in advocating for the students and staff here in LISD!
I hope you all enjoy these final, HOT, days of summer with your families. We look forward to continuing the fun this school year!
Dr. Lori Rapp

Legislative Update
As I mentioned in my video update, we have been disappointed by the Texas Education Agency's changes to their school rating system as well as our state's refusal to raise the Basic Allotment or otherwise alleviate the financial pressure Texas public schools are under. This week I wrote a letter to LISD's elected officials to outline these concerns, explain their impact on LISD and propose possible solutions. Read it HERE
Find this letter and additional resources at LISD.net/Legislative. Thank you for advocating for our schools!

We are so grateful to the One Vision Task Force for their hard work over the past few months to evaluate and assess needs for our district.
