Parenting Corner (Standing Together)
Being a parent is hard. The good news is, you are not alone: we're all in this together!
As you know, I’ll periodically post resources to help parents navigate these exciting years of development.
October is officially known as “Bullying Awareness and Prevention Month.” I’ve always preferred to call it, “Standing Together Month” because the word “bullying” is both misused and could be prevented if we all- including adults- tried harder to “stand together” on common ground in a world with too much darkness. As principal, my hope is that each of your children would bring light into our school, into our community, and into our world. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that.”
This week Ms. Ray and I have been reading the book One by Kathryn Otoshi to students to emphasize the importance of standing together. You can find a synopsis of the text here. Please ask your kids what it means to stand up instead of standing by!
As part of “standing together month,” next week (October 14-18), our counselors will be talking to students about bullying. Topics covered include the definition, types, and how to stand up against bullying. Below is a helpful resource to educate parents further on this topic. On Wednesday, October 16th, the MVES community will wear orange to unite for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Our goal is to send a visible message that no child should experience bullying.

Oct. Week 2: Engineering: The 3 Little Pigs Architectural Challenge!
Observation: I live in a shelter! (House, Apartment, Trailer, Duplex, Townhouse).
Question: How do architects build sturdy houses?
Problem: How can I build a house that won’t fall down … if I get a visit from the Big, Bad Wolf!
Engineering Challenge: Build a house that can not be blown over (by yourself OR try a fan for older students) - The house could fit anything from a small toy to a small child!
Draw your plan and then begin to create!

Pipe cleaners
Straws
Toothpicks
Playdoh
Any kind of tape
Marshmallows
