Update from Principal Jen Kravitz
March 22, 2024
Dear Mary Hogan Families,
This week was centered on being inquirers, as we had the solar eclipse museum at Mary Hogan and our All School Meeting focused on this attribute. Some of our inquiry is highlighted below. However, this week's newsletter is largely an update on some of the projects that are in action led by Student Council:
- an art contest
- a bake sale to benefit the playground
- recycling old Hawk shirts
- reducing our use of plastic
Their hard work on this as well as updating the menu (which will be shared next week) have been inspiring to watch unfold.
Also in this week's newsletter is information about next year's grade sections (below).
Be well,
Jen
Grade Sections for 2024-25
Early in March, we reviewed student data as part of our process to determine the number of sections for each grade for the 2024-25 school year. While it would be ideal to have 4 sections at each grade, we do not yet have this option. As such, the data informed the sections for next year. They will be:
Preschool - 2
Kindergarten - 4
1st grade - 4
2nd grade - 4
3rd grade - 3
4th grade - 3
5th grade - 4
In late April, we will share more about the teachers at each grade.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Hawk Shirts That No Longer Fit
Dear students and guardians,
If your hawk t-shirt does not fit, we would like to repurpose it into a bag!
Bring it to the front lobby and put it in the box saying t-shirt donations. We are going to sell the bags. The money will go to the student council to help with the projects we do there. We want to raise awareness of repurposing and recycling.
Let's go Hawks!

Mary Hogan Hawk Water Bottles
The Student Council and Water Health Club are working to reduce plastic waste.
You can pre-order an all-new reusable Hawk water bottle! These are a much better option than plastic water bottles, which can hurt the environment.
Water bottles are high-quality aluminum, silver at the top and fading into blue at the bottom. They are customized with a Mary Hogan hawk logo on it and will hold 25 oz. They will cost $12.50.
To get one, you must pre-order using this form, so fill it out before April 2nd.
This Week at Mary Hogan
Eclipse Museum
Students had a chance to learn more about the eclipse, sun, and the moon this week in the library. They also tried on their eclipse glasses that all students will get.
All School Meeting
2nd graders helped us understand what it meant to be inquirers and shared more about their most recent unit of inquiry in How the World Works.
Playing with the music
Students in 4th grade have been busy learning new songs on their recorders in music class.
Neurodiversity Celebration Week
We celebrated neurodiversity this week each day on the announcements as well as in classes. Students were curious about what neurodiversity meant as well as were encouraged to think about how each of our differences make our community stronger.
Want to know more about neurodiversity? Check out this infographic, adapted by Xanthe. Videos of the 5th graders sharing more information are on our Instagram page too!

ACSD Preschool Enrollment Survey Is Open
If you have a child who will be 3 by Sept 1, 2024 and needs preschool placement, please fill out the preschool interest survey by the end of March. ACSD has two school-based programs: Mary Hogan and Bridport. Space is extremely limited, so we also encourage you to consider other preschool options. ACSD partners with prequalified private preschool programs to pay tuition for 10 hours/week, 35 weeks/year of preschool. This means your child could receive a tuition discount at a private preschool. Your first step is to enroll with the program directly. They will help you to complete the preschool tuition paperwork. Visit this site for more about which local programs have met the quality standards for partnership or contact Meg Baker at mbaker@acsdvt.org or 382-0045
