Message from the Principal
It's hard to believe that September has come and gone and we are now in October!! We are so happy to have students learning and growing every day. We are so proud of our teaching staff and how hard they are working to provide engaging lessons and get to know their students. Some days are easier than others, but the feedback we've been getting from parents so far is very positive. Thank you for taking the time to acknowledge what is going well! We sincerely appreciate it!
As we continue through this unique school year, there are many opportunities for students to share how they are doing given the current times. It is not surprising that students bring up issues, concerns, or questions regarding distance learning, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, wildfire dangers, and the ongoing and dynamic Black Lives Matter racial justice movement. Students of all ages know that significant changes are happening around them and they can be naturally curious and anxious. It is important for us to acknowledge that there is a great deal going on in our world and as educators, our job is to help guide and facilitate student learning about the world around them. Teachers help students think and talk about the events, issues, and questions that we are seeing and hearing locally, nationally, and globally. As public educators, we must not to turn away from these learning opportunities but rather step into them.
The Beaverton School District is committed to becoming an anti-racist school district – free from hatred and racism – and providing a culturally relevant and inclusive environment for all students. Additionally, Sato's mission is focused on providing active, relevant, educational experiences that foster globally minded innovative citizens in and out of the classroom. To that end we want to ensure equitable outcomes for students and a commitment to social justice. Together, these commitments define our work for all students, but we recognize that they are paramount to the success of our most vulnerable and marginalized students.
As part of this effort, the Beaverton School District, in alignment with the Oregon Department of Education and new 2018 Oregon Social Science Standards, is launching new social studies lessons this year to begin addressing the new state standards. For elementary students, the first unit is entitled “Identity, Culture, Race, and Racism, and Change Makers (K-2) or Anti-Racism and Action (3-5)”. These interdisciplinary units were created by a collaborative team of teacher leaders. They are meant to be responsive to this current moment, our racial reality, and to the evolving scope of Social Science education. Teachers have started or will start soon, communicating with families about these units and will continue to do so throughout the year.
Please know that we are available for questions or further conversation at any time.
Stay Safe, Stay Well, and Stay Positive!
