Good afternoon, Woodbury Middle School Families,
Welcome to March! The chilly start reinforces the saying, "March comes in like a lion." Let's hope the "lamb" isn't too far behind. We have been very busy at WMS this past week! Mr. Hadoulis hosted his annual Chopped contest in his 7th-grade culinary classes. Each student had to create a dessert using the ingredients provided. They were judged on categories such as taste, creativity, and presentation. I had the privilege of being a judge, and it was pretty challenging to select a winner. The 8th graders will participate in Chopped with a "Savory" theme this week.
On Friday, Mr. Brutting’s ELA classes welcomed students from Nonnewaug High School, specifically Mr. Brennan’s Journalism class, to kick off their journalism unit. The students discussed the topics they covered in their writing and how to make them relevant to their school. The high school students then worked in smaller groups with the WMS students to help them brainstorm and refine their topics for the unit. This peer mentoring approach is a fantastic way for the students to collaborate with their future classmates from Nonnewaug.
Holy Clothing Drive! With the guidance of the Alliance Leadership team, specifically Anna Dewey and Olivia Bombero, the students at WMS collected over a thousand pieces of clothing. The students contacted the Salvation Army, and 19 big bags were loaded onto the truck and headed to those in need. This is another outstanding project led by our Alliance team.
Attention 8th grade parents, high school counselors will be at WMS Thursday and Friday of this week to schedule classes for next year. Appointments were sent home last week electronically. If you have any questions or can not make your appointment, please reach out to your student’s counselor.
Tomorrow evening our PIM meeting will be held in the LMC at 6:30. Topics for discussion are March Madness and end-of-the-year activities. Thank you to Mrs. Shuhart and Mrs. Effes for leading this important community collaboration.

Trimester 2 ends this Friday, please be sure you are checking PowerSchool for missing assignments. The new trimester will begin on Monday with new UA classes.
From Nonnewaug Admin:
Thursday, March 20th, there is a mandatory AgriScience Accepted Students Night at Nonnewaug. The evening begins at 5:00 pm in the auditorium and will proceed with the meeting and tour. There will also be an open house for ALL rising 9th-grade students (presently in 8th grade). Between 6:00 and 8:00 pm, 8th-grade students may take self-guided tours of the building. All clubs and sports will have a table set up in the gymnasium so students can get information and see what Nonnewaug offers. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend events. We hope to see everyone on March 20th.
Have a great week!

Please make sure to review the Woodbury Middle School Student Handbook with your student regarding cell phones. Some of you may be aware that the state has issued recommendations on cell phone usage in schools. I have included the proposed language from the state below. Click the picture to access the entire document from the state.
• Middle School − The policy for middle school students should also focus on removing cell phones from the school day or classroom. Developmentally, this age group is particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of excessive personal technology use and has a difficult time controlling their impulses. Concurrently, middle school students experience increased autonomy and independence during the school day, which can lead to increased opportunity for cell phone misuse. − Possession of cell phones in this age group is likely to be viewed as a rite of passage into adulthood, so communication and application of policies that restrict use must be developed in consideration of the specific challenges of middle school students.
