January News--2023

We are close to being done with the first semester of the year. In fact, the first day of 2nd semester is January 17th! For students, the changing of semesters is a great time to reflect on the 1st half of the year and make goals to improve where growth is necessary. For some students, time management or organization might be a helpful focus. For others, active engagement in class might be a game-changer. Whatever the goal, write it down, look at it often, and tell others what you are working toward.

I have been thinking about ways parents can help support their students in their goals and their growth. One of the single most impactful things adults can do is to have clear, simple, high expectations for students about controllable factors. In fact, if I could implore parents to reinforce any message at home, it would be: "show up every day, and do your best." Report cards from 1st semester will come out in a few weeks, and it is a great opportunity to have a conversation around whether or not the marks recorded are reflections of your student's best efforts. Focusing on the efforts often yields deeper conversations than remarks about outcomes.

I am not really a New Years Resolution fan. However, I am a fan of working to be 1% better every day. That 1% adds up quickly and is easier to tackle than a full overhaul of habits and focus. I hope that 2023 is full of small, yet amazing, changes and growth that add up to make a year of successful endeavors and positive outcomes for all.

We kicked off the last day of school before winter break with our annual Alumni Panel. Students in grades 6-12 got to hear from Stanfield grads ranging from the Class of 1974 to the Class of 2022: Cristine Frazier (Class of ‘74), Brad Cook (Class of ‘02), Hallie Holt (Class of ‘19), Miah Goff (Class of ‘19), Savannah Sharp (Class of ‘20), Kylee McClure (Class of ‘20), Yorcely Reyes (Class of ‘21), Anaih Ibarra (Class of ‘22), and Jennifer Flores (Class of ‘22). It is always a privilege to have our alumni return to share their experiences with current students!
