December 2023
The York Central School District is committed to preparing, challenging, and inspiring all students to reach their potential
A December to Remember!
The York Central School Music Department celebrated three wonderful winter concerts that put everyone in the holiday spirit!
The spirit of giving was demonstrated throughout the school from our youngest to our oldest Golden Knights. Their combined efforts helped us to provide holiday cheer and meals to many in the York community.
Classroom learning continued as students approach the final month of Semester 1 when we return from winter recess.
The 2023-2024 winter sports season kicked-off with great success! Be sure to bookmark the York Athletic Schedules webpage so you can follow your favorite Knight!

HS Students Connect with SUNY Professor to Learn Impacts of Cold War
Students in Mr. Ben Chatley's History of Sport class had the privilege of engaging in a unique remote video discussion on the Cold War's impact on Olympic Sport.
Dr. Eileen Lyon, a history professor from SUNY Fredonia and a former figure skating judge, dedicated the morning to exploring aspects of figure skating. She delved into how the scoring of figure skating competitions in the Olympics during the Cold War was influenced by political and geographical factors.
Utilizing student-generated discussion questions, Dr. Lyon linked historical events to the sport, examining Olympic results from the 1984 games and addressing the evolving fairness in the sport. As a former national figure skating champion herself, Dr. Lyon not only provided students with a meaningful experience but also offered a richer context for understanding the historical era.
Mr. Chatley, who studied under Dr. Lyons at SUNY Fredonia, expressed immense joy at her participation in the learning session.
"Dr. Lyon brings a wealth of knowledge as both a history professor and a figure skating competitor and judge, offering our students a distinctive learning opportunity. We, at York CSD, are delighted that she could join us for this discussion, contributing to our ongoing exploration of the Cold War rivalry in sports between the United States and the Soviet Union."
Mrs. Ayers' Class Recipe for Mac-N- Cheese is Moo-licious!
Mac-n-Cheese is moo-licious!
Mrs. Jennifer Ayers' second grade students participated in New York Agriculture in the Classroom’s Mac-n-Cheese Challenge hosted by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Livingston County.
The results are in and Mrs. Ayers' class won first place in their division!
The students created their own recipe and marketing materials, including videos. They worked on this project in small groups for the posters and the whole class developed the recipe and packaging design.
When they taste tested their finished product, it was too dry so Mrs. Ayers helped the students adjust the recipe by adding more cheese and cooking it for less time to make their final recipe more creamy. Mrs. Ayers said the project helped the students reinforce several valuable skills such as planning, working with others, analyzing, and making observations.

HS Students Attend Entrepreneurial Summit at Bryant & Stratton College
In November, York High School Social Studies teacher Mr. Bill MacKenzie took a group of high school students to the Entrepreneurial Youth Summit at Bryant and Stratton College's Greece, NY location.
The summit is a program of Junior Achievement's, Be Entrepreneurial.
Students from several area schools participated in the summit and explored foundational concepts such as market and need analysis, design thinking, research, funding, and developing a business model canvas.
Students worked in small groups throughout the summit to bring their ideas to fruition and ultimately pitch their business plans.
Senior Jacob Pangrazio received gift cards for being a part of the team that was chosen as the overall winner for their sports injury app business plan and marketing presentation.
Four HS Student Leaders Send the Elves to the Elementary School!
Ava Beardsley, Tessa Rodewell, Hailey Nearhopd and Adeline Ayers were among a group of students who attended a Leadership Summit at SUNY Geneseo with their principal Mrs. Peet in the fall.
From that summit, these four sophomores and juniors, decided they were going to plan a special day for the elementary students. For several weeks, Ava, Tessa, Hayley and Adeline spent every free moment of their school day planning, preparing and carrying out an absolutely magical day for our elementary school students.
"These servant leaders are wise beyond their years. I am proud and grateful for their leadership," Mrs. Peet said.
The girls gathered high school student volunteers to spend time with elementary school students. In the classrooms, the student volunteers helped the younger students create ornaments to be hung on the tree in the auditorium. They also read holiday stories in each classroom.
The result was a day of memories the students will never forget.
Big thanks also to all the HS students who volunteered to spend time with the little Knights.
YCS is one special family.
Their smiles say it all!
