Jazz Updates
Hello! Quick update on Jazz events. We are now officially signed up for the Tarleton Jazz Festival on April 26th. Additionally, UTA’s festival ended up not working with our schedule, you can remove it from your calendars. Thanks!
Female Instrumentalist Action Item
The band does not currently own enough concert dresses for each female to receive a dress. Females wishing to wear a dress (instead of a tux) will be asked to provide their own solid black dress for concert season. You must have your dress before pre-UIL on March 6th.
Here are some important things to note when purchasing a dress:
- Dresses should be long sleeved or not reveal too much skin (no spaghetti straps)
- Dresses should be floor length
- Dresses must be solid black (no glitter, sequins, etc)
The district is aware that we do not have dresses, but there is not currently a solution on the horizon.

Exchange Student Opportunity
Need a New Practice Partner?
Would your family consider being a volunteer host family for an exchange student who plays an instrument. We have many students who play in a band or orchestra and are waiting for a caring family to host them for the upcoming school year. Your son or daughter may also know one or more of the 5 fantastic international students enrolled at GHS this year. Students pay their own personal, education, travel expenses and have health insurance. For more information contact Ross Carnes, rhcarnes47@gmail.com or call at 817-874-2459.
Pictured in the attachment is one of our German boys and his host brother who played in the Southlake Carroll band this year.
Solo Contest Signup
If you are enrolled in lessons, then you should be playing a solo at our Solo Contest on 4/29. Please use the form HERE to register. Deadline to signup is the end of the day on 3/7.
Double Reed Day!
I want to let you all know of a great opportunity for your students coming up later this spring. UTA's Double Reed Day is happening on Saturday, April 5 from 8am-5pm. This event is free to attend and open to oboists and bassoonists of all ages and skill levels! It is a super fun event with guest artists performing in recitals, masterclasses, and elective classes. At the end of the day, everyone learns new ensemble music and plays together as a giant oboe choir and double reed ensemble.
Our featured guest artists this year are oboist Dr. Euridice Alvarez from Baylor University and bassoonist Dr. Darrel Hale from University of North Texas!
There also is an optional solo contest, which costs $7 to enter. There are two divisions: Junior High (5th-8th grade) and High School (9th-12th grade.) It is a great opportunity to prepare for solo contest or State Solo and Ensemble and receive written feedback from a panel of double reed players. Prizes for the winners include free lessons, gift cards to Bocal Majority, and the high school winners get to perform with piano on the final recital. All of the details are on the registration website.
I hope that you will register and join me on April 5! It's going to be a great time!
