SMS Weekly Update
June 7, 2024
Life at SMS
This week, SMS celebrates our Civics elective class. Spearheaded by Mrs. Brooks, the Civics class has recently visited the state capitol to watch a legislative session and meet district Representative Courtney Neron and Senator Aaron Woods.
Also, students were allowed to participate in the Civics Bee, an incredible experience for SMS students chosen because of their written essay identifying a struggle within their community and then describing a solution utilizing government systems. Only 20 students statewide were selected to participate, and SMS represented 4 of those seats! Congratulations to Nate, Shivani N, Callen, and Shivani V were selected, and Shivani N who earned 3rd place at the Bee!
Dear Archers,
LIBRARY BOOK RETURN:
All books are due back to the Media Center on June 7. After that, student accounts will be charged.
CHROMEBOOK RETURN:
Chromebooks and chargers will be returned June 10-11 during ELA classes.
Before returning the Chromebook, please ensure it is FULLY CHARGED.
Students will report any damage to the Chromebook when they check it back in.
6th and 7th graders will get their same device checked back out to them next year.
If devices are not returned on the due date, student accounts will be charged the full amount for the device (protection plans do not apply in this case).
END OF YEAR:
Students will clean out lockers (staff will check by the last day of school).
Students are welcome to donate any school supplies to the counseling center.
There will be a special schedule on the last day of school to include various field day activities, yearbook signing, and rotating through 7th/8th-grade teachers (an introduction of them for students to see who they might have next year).

Where: SMS Stadium
Time: 4:00pm-5:15pm
- Students report to Main Gym @ 3:30 p.m. for gown pick-up (students will need to know their height). For promotion, ALL students will wear provided gowns. They can wear what they would like under the gown and to the dance (school appropriate).
- Gates open @ 3:15 p.m. (Football entrance, stadium gates, neighborhood gates) for families to sit in the bleachers. Parking is available in all of our lots. There will be extra marked handicap parking available.
- Promotion take-down happens quickly after the ceremony has concluded, as supervision moves into the building for the dance. If you would like to meet up with your student in between the ceremony and the dance, be sure to make arrangements with your student for a “meeting place”. Gowns will be turned in prior to students heading into the dance, but pictures can be taken after the ceremony while they are still wearing their gowns.
- The dance is for current SMS 8th graders only, 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. No-re-entry!
Volunteers Needed for End of Year Activities
Volunteer to help make the 8th grade promotion and dance a complete success! We ask that all parents (not just 8th grade parents) come support this group of students. We have openings on June 11 and June 12. Thank you for helping to make our year end celebrations successful!
