Magyar's Message Feb. 23, 2024
-From The Desk of the Superintendent-
Dear ALCS Families,
Spring is in the air. A sure sign that spring is right around the corner is that our spring sports have started practices and try-outs. Good luck to everyone this season.
Congratulations to our Division I State Champion diver Bella Pfeil! She also made Lorain County history becoming the first county athlete to win a State diving championship. Congratulations to Jake Gilbride for finishing in 10th place at the State diving championships.
Since February 16, the district has been using the BoardDocs online platform to manage Board meeting agendas, minutes and related documents. These documents are now searchable through BoardDocs. Also, beginning with our Board of Education meeting that was held this week (February 20), all meetings are now audio recorded. For the February 20 meeting agenda and audio recording, click here.
For future meeting agendas, go to our district website, click the “District” tab on the top banner, click “Board of Education,” then click the “Board Agenda and Policy” tab. You will be directed to BoardDocs where you will find the most recent Board meeting agenda (February 20). Click on the agenda. Once you have opened the agenda, you will see that the top item is the link to click for the audio recording of the meeting. Audio recordings of meetings will be uploaded to the top of that meeting’s agenda within 24 hours of the meeting. The Board is committed to transparency and is pleased to offer our community the opportunity to easily search and view our agendas, minutes, and related documents, and to listen to the audio recordings of our public meetings.
Parents/guardians: Do you hand your child your iPad or smartphone to ‘play with?’
● Do you understand the content risks associated with your child playing otherwise benign games like Clash of Clans or Words with Friends ?
● Do you realize that your very young children (ages 6-10) have probably already been exposed to online inappropriate adult content?
If any of these surprised you, you will want to make plans to hear from nationally recognized speaker, Jesse Weinberger, who will be presenting on a very important topic for parents, “Internet Safety,” during our second Parent Information Night, sponsored by the North Coast Rotary Club, that will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. March 12 in the Avon Lake High School Commons, 175 Avon Belden Road. This event is for parents only and it will not be recorded.
She also will be working with our students (grades 5-10) prior to the Parent Information Night presenting Internet safety information. After hearing the presentation, the students will be provided the opportunity to give anonymous feedback via a survey regarding what they will change about their digital life and/or digital behavior after hearing the information, as well as what they think is the biggest issue at school, for example school day interrupted by device related drama, sexting (inappropriate words, photos, videos), cyberbullying, addicted overuse of devices, or none of the above. An optional question for students relates to if they could educate parents, what would they tell them.
Please save the date and plan to attend this very important event March 12 as it will provide insight into our ever-changing digital landscape.
Reminder that our community survey for feedback regarding our Building ALegacy initiative closes February 29. Your candid and honest feedback is important. We thank you in advance for your time and responses. Click here.
Thank you for your continued support of our schools.
Sincerely,
Joelle Magyar

ALHS National Merit Finalists
Congratulations to ALHS students Mary Bigenho, Jack Fink, and Dylan Missal for advancing to Finalist status in the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The students were named Semifinalists last fall and are now among 15,000 students across the country recently named as Finalists. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered later this spring.
To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® or ACT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).
