It is our 30th year in this building, and we have recently received an update with brand new carpet and a lot of elbow grease from our custodial staff. We are so excited to start the new school year! Our staff has been working hard to get our classrooms ready and to get started with learning.
On Wednesday, August 28, we are holding mini-conferences from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. If you haven't already signed up, click on the following link to sign up for mini-conferences:

Busing information
If you are eligible for transportation, you will be receiving information regarding pick up and drop off times and location for your child. Please call Transportation at 385-4795 with any questions regarding bus routing.
Please be aware that buses may run late the first few days of school as we learn end of day procedures and ensure students are getting to where they need to be.
You can track your child's bus this year by downloading the FirstView app.
Breakfast & Lunch through Nutrition Services
Our schools provide healthy meals each day. We have joined Minnesota’s Free School Meals for Kids program. All students are allowed one reimbursable breakfast and one reimbursable lunch free of charge each day at school.
Although no application is required to receive this free meal benefit, filling out the Application for Educational benefits is still important! Your child(ren) may qualify for other benefits such as: reduced fees for classes and other activities. Your application will also help the school qualify for education funds and other discounts.
Online Applications will be available on our website. If you wish to fill out a paper application please contact Jess Peña at japena@rwps.org.
Nurse's office update
For the protection and care of children, state recommendations require prescription medication only be dispersed upon receipt of physician’s signature and directions to administer the medicine. Parents should deliver the medication to the school nurse and sign a release to give medication. That may also be taken care of during your child’s mini-conference before school starts.
Flu clinic for students
- October 2, 2023 from 9:00 am - 11:30 am at Burnside Elementary.
- Homeland Health Specialists accept several insurances. Children without health insurance may qualify to receive the flu vaccine for $20 or less under the Minnesota Vaccine for Children Program.
- The cost for persons who choose to pay privately is $40 for the standard flu shot and $45 for the FluMist (if available).
Dental Clinics
We will be scheduling dental clinics in the fall - more information to come.
Please ensure your child's vaccines are up to date.
Attendance Information
The school board believes that regular school attendance is directly related to success in academic work, benefits students socially, provides opportunities for important communications between teachers and students, and establishes regular habits of dependability important to the future of the student. The purpose of this policy is to encourage regular school attendance. It is intended to be positive and not punitive. See policy https://assets-rst7.rschooltoday.com/rst7files/uploads/sites/795/2023/10/04134351/Policy-503-Student-Attendance-1.pdf
Students are allowed up to 10 excused absences per school year. This means the parent/guardian has informed the school as to why the student is absent. A letter will be sent to the parent/guardian letting them know the student has reached 7 excused absences. If the student reaches 10 excused absences the parent will be notified that a medical note (dental, vision, mental/physical) from the physician/therapist may be required to excuse any further absences. If the medical note is not received when required, the absence will be marked as an unexcused absence.
If a student is absent and the school receives no communication from home, these absences are considered unexcused. Once the student has reached 3 days of unexcused absences a telephone call and/or letter will be sent to the parent/guardian. When the student reaches 7 days of unexcused absences, another phone call and/or letter will be sent home. Additionally, under MN statute 120A.34 the school district can refer the student to Goodhue County Health and Human Services for additional support in getting the student to school.
Issues with Tardiness
The most crucial learning hours of a school day are the morning hours because they are when students are most attentive. Students who are tardy miss the beginning of their morning classes, and they also cause a distraction when they arrive late to class. We schedule reading and math blocks in the morning so that our students have the best opportunity to learn. Arriving late impedes crucial learning in these two core subject areas.
Student Drop Off & Pick Up
Parents may drop off students in the right lane of the loop near the cafeteria beginning at 7:15 a.m. Student drop off is not allowed in the lot at the front of the building. Buses use that location, and it is not a safe place to drop off. Once students arrive, they will proceed directly to their classroom. Any students who arrive after 7:30 a.m. will need to be checked in at the main office before proceeding to class.
At the end of the day, students will be walked to the cafeteria area. Again, the loop and attached parking lot should be used. Parents need to either park in a designated parking space and walk to the pick-up lines, or pull into the pick-up loop to load your child directly into your vehicle from the passenger side only. Please be patient, as it always takes a little time at the beginning of the year for the process to become efficient. It is imperative that your child knows his/her end of day plan. We know that, occasionally, end of day changes occur during the school day. If this happens, please call our office before 1:30 p.m. Emailing your child’s teacher with same-day changes is not recommended as she/he may not have time to check email or, if the teacher is gone for the day, the substitute will not have access to email. With many students at Burnside, we work diligently to assure a smooth end of the day.
Volunteering
Parent and community volunteers are welcome at Burnside! Volunteers can help in a variety of ways - working directly with students in the classroom, helping out with school events or field trips, working at home on various projects. Volunteers always work under the guidance of school personnel. Please notify your child’s teacher or the office if you are interested in volunteering. Please note that volunteers may be required to complete a Volunteer Application Form and/or criminal background check prior to volunteering.
