HALLOWEEN GUIDELINES
Dear Westwood Students and Families,
As the festive spirit of Halloween approaches, we are excited to see the creativity and enthusiasm our students bring to the celebration. Our primary objective is to ensure that all students enjoy this special day in a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment.
To that end, we kindly ask everyone to adhere to the following PUSD guidelines when choosing their costumes for any school-related Halloween events:
1. **No Masks:** For the safety of our students and staff, and to ensure everyone can be easily recognized, please refrain from wearing masks. Face paint or makeup is welcomed as an alternative.
2. **Avoid Gore or anything Promoting Violence:** Costumes depicting excessive gore, horror, or violence (including weapons or replicas such as swords or guns) can be misconstrued and lead to unnecessary distress or concern.
3. **Be Culturally Respectful:** Halloween is an opportunity for fun and creativity, not unintentional harm. Please avoid costumes that appropriate or misrepresent cultures, or might be seen as stereotypical or offensive. Let’s celebrate in a way that respects the diverse backgrounds and experiences of all members of our school community.
4. **Avoid Overly Loud or Noisy Accessories:** Items that make excessive noise are not allowed. This includes bells, whistles, sirens, or any electronic devices that produce loud sounds.
5. **Modesty Matters:** Costumes should still adhere to the school’s dress code. Please ensure that outfits are not too revealing and suitable for the educational setting.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in ensuring a positive atmosphere for all. If you have any questions or need clarification on what's appropriate, please do not hesitate to reach out to the school office.
BIRTHDAY TREATS REMINDER
Due to potential life-threatening allergies in the classroom, no food treats will be accepted. Foods prepared at home may be used only for your students. (PUSD Policy, Article 5, Section 5.31) If you would like to send something in for your child's birthday, we request that you send in FOOD FREE treats. Please contact your child's teacher to discuss sending in FOOD FREE treats. We encourage items such as pencils, stickers, or bookmarks. Donating a book to the classroom and/or library or some class PE equipment is also a great way to recognize your child's birthday.
ATTENDANCE REMINDER
Next week is a full week of school for elementary students.
However, on Monday, October 28th our district’s middle schools and high schools have a professional growth day. We look forward to seeing our elementary students and engaging in a day of learning on October 28th.
Friday, November 1st: After reviewing district-wide data regarding attendance, the day after Halloween, there has been a pattern of increased absences. Please help our school by making attendance a priority on Friday, November 1st.
Dear Families,
This week, our school community will focus on the Other People Mindset of Knowing That My Words and Actions Affect Others, which means having an awareness that everything that we say and do can affect others — and our relationships with them.
Whether we speak, email, text, or post, our words and actions can have a positive or negative effect. The words and actions we choose can lift others up or bring them down, and they also impact us. When we all think carefully about our words and actions and show respect and care for those around us, we create a happier and healthier community.
To practice and encourage this Other People Mindset at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.
Thank you for your support!
COMPUTERS2KIDS
The San Diego County Office of Education and Computers2Kids are hosting an event for families to purchase affordable computers on Saturday, November 2, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Morse High School, 6905 Skyline Drive, CA (Drive Thru Event).
See this link for details.
Since the beginning of the 2023-24 academic year, the partnership between SDCOE and Computers2Kids has provided refurbished computers to San Diego families. As of March 2024, they have provided approximately 3000 refurbished computers to over 1,300 San Diego families. We hope your families are able to benefit from this event.
LIBRARY NEWSLETTER
October 14-18 is Digital Citizenship Week. Here's a calendar of activities. Teachers and Parents can take advantage of these resources from Common Sense Media and their parent engagement resources to keep their children safe in this digital world. You can look up book reviews, video games and other digital citizenship resources.
The used book sale will be held every Thursday, unless it’s raining, just outside the library. Proceeds of the sale go to buying books that students are asking for. It’s a great way to support the library. Only 25 cents a book!
Support your child’s love of reading by donating new books to the library! Any new hardcover books that are purchased and donated are greatly appreciated! Here’s a link: Amazon Wish List. Donated books will have a book plate in the front of the book with your child’s name and they’ll have first check out privileges.
Another way to support the library is to donate gently used hardcover children’s books appropriate for grades TK-5, or kleenex. You can drop them off in the library with a note.
Have a safe and happy Halloween!
Mrs. Whitelock, Librarian at Westwood Elem.
