Our vision is to develop happy - high achieving students and staff
A message from the Principal & Assistant Principal
Happy New Year to all of our CVE families!
We hope you enjoyed time spent with family and friends over the Holiday. As we ring in 2025, we look forward to all the possibilities and new learning that await our CVE students. We’d like to take a moment to remind everyone of our vision at CVE which is to develop happy, high achieving students and staff. Our teachers are committed to not only making sure your child is learning the expected standards, but they are also devoted to making sure your child is engaged in learning that encourages cooperation, critical thinking, and fun!
As our partners in education, we encourage you to take time to work with your child whether it is practicing his/her math facts, reading, or writing a fun story together. Ask them about their individual goal and help them practice the skills to reach this goal. When kids know parents are interested in their academic lives, they take school more seriously as well. Together we will continue to GROW in Green!
With winter in full force now, we’d appreciate your help by reminding your child/children to dress appropriately for the colder weather. If the temperature is 20 degrees (“real feel” including wind chill), we will have outside recess. If the temperature is below 20 and/or if it’s snowing/raining excessively where children will get wet, we will have indoor recess.
As we return to school from a much needed break, it’s our hope that our CVE students are healthy & well! Being in class every day is critical to the overall success of your child in school. Much of the learning taking place requires hands-on lessons that are difficult to replicate at home. Students learn from the rich discussion and questions from both their peers and the teacher. As a reminder, our school day starts at 8:00 am and ends at 3:40 pm. Please contact the office if you have any questions regarding attendance!
CMAS testing is on the horizon and we are asking that if you have a student(s) in the testing grades, please plan doctor visits and/or vacations around the CMAS testing dates. More detailed information will be provided in the February newsletter.
3rd Grade: April 7 - 10, 2025 (math, reading, writing)
4th Grade: April 7 - 10 and April 14 - 17, 2025 (math, reading, writing, social studies)
5th Grade: April 7 - 10 and April 14 - 17, 2025 (math, reading, writing, science)
The RE-2 School Board has adopted a new personal device policy that will begin January 6, 2025. Students at all elementary schools will be expected to keep their personal devices off and in their backpacks throughout the school day. The research demonstrates that the presence of cell phones during the school day hinders the educational environment, disrupts learning, and compromises social development. In addition the research and experience show that cell phones in school create multiple challenges, impacting students’ academic performance, social relationships, communication skills, and engaging meaningfully in their education environment. We appreciate your cooperation in implementing the new policy.
We are excited about the possibilities that each new year brings, and we have no doubt 2025 will be a year of learning, growing, and sharing among our Cactus Valley community! Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We would love to hear from you!
Best Wishes,
Kelly Detlefsen, Principal
Stacy VanHercke, Assistant Principal

Counselor’s Corner
Happy New Year!! I hope you had a wonderful, relaxing break and are ready to learn and grow in the new year. We are moving along and entering our third quarter of the school year. Sarah Fleming is teaching MindUp to Kindergarten which teaches children how to calm their bodies when they have big emotions. In 1st thru 5th we are continuing with the Second Step curriculum. 1st grade is working on managing worry. 2nd grade is focused on solving problems with friends. 5th grade is working on avoiding assumptions. I will be doing Second Step lessons on recognizing, reporting and refusing Bullying in Kinder thru 5th grade when I push into classrooms.
Totes for Hope, a program run through the River Center, gives families 6-7 non perishable food items weekly and is distributed on Wednesdays. If you are a family that could use the supplemental food, please contact me and I can get you signed up.
If you need hats, gloves, or winter boots, please reach out and I can help get these items for your student. Please, don’t forget to label all items.
Public health will be offering FREE dental screenings/cleanings for ALL of our students, families (parents) and staff at our schools.
