A message from the principal
Happy November!
October was a great month at Dayton Elementary. Thank you for attending our parent/teacher conferences. If we missed you, please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher to schedule a make-up conference time.
We are looking forward to the month of November and the great things we’ll accomplish together. In the month of November, our school-wide focus is Gratitude. Character Strong defines gratitude as “choosing to appreciate the people and things in our lives.” We have many things to be grateful for in our community. As a school, we are excited to honor and show our gratitude to our Veterans on Monday, November 11. Please see the information linked here to learn more about donuts with my Vet on Monday, November 11. Honor your Veteran by completing this sheet to be displayed in our school.
Looking for more information about gratitude? Check out these additional resources to support your conversations at home:
Kindergarten Family Connection
We continue to be extremely grateful to serve as your partner in your child’s education. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to make your student’s school experience even better at Dayton Elementary.

Beginning Wednesday, November 6, the Rebel Lot will be open again
The City of Dayton has completed paving the Rebel Parking Lot. This means we are transitioning back to our regular parent pick-up dismissal process.
Families with the last names beginning with A-K will pick their children up from the Dayton lot.
Families with the last names beginning with L-Z will pick their children up from the newly paved Rebel Lot.
This will begin on Wednesday, November 6.
Thank you for your patience with this process! We appreciate it.
November Specialists Highlights
Art
Project Highlight: 5th Grade Woodland Animals
In observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, 5th graders created a drawing inspired by Anishinaabe/Ojibwe artist Mark Anthony Jacobsen. He explores the stories and elements of his heritage through abstract painting and drawing; demonstrating the relationship between people, animals, and nature in his art.
CORE
In CORE we are getting into the nitty gritty of how to better use many different apps such as Seesaw, Google Slides, Google Sheets, Bridges Math, and more!
New this year in CORE, we are learning how to use these apps with Health topics.
Kindergarten - dental hygiene
First Grade - fire safety and staying healthy
Second Grade - emotions and general health topics
Third Grade - fire, bike, and playground safety
Fourth Grade - bullying and peer pressure
Fifth Grade - reading nutrition labels and digital citizenship
If you have any questions about anything we are learning, please feel free to reach out.
Explorations
We are excited to share the engaging topics your children are exploring in their explorations classes this month. Each grade is diving into fascinating subjects that spark curiosity and foster a love for learning. Here's a quick overview of what our young explorers are working on:
Kindergarten: What is a Living Thing?
Our kindergarteners are investigating what makes something alive and what living things need to survive. They’ll learn where these vital elements can be found and discover the unique environments that support life.
1st Grade: Plant Power!
First graders are focusing on the special features of plants and how these adaptations help them survive in different environments. We’re also exploring how plants have inspired humans to solve everyday problems—plant-inspired innovations are all around us!
2nd Grade: Marvelous Materials
Second graders are delving into the properties of materials and how those properties can change. Through hands-on activities, they will discover how we can manipulate materials to suit different purposes.
3rd Grade: Forces and Motion
In 3rd grade, students are learning all about the forces that move objects and how motion is influenced by pushes, pulls, gravity, and more. It's a month full of experiments and exciting discoveries!
4th Grade: Geography and Human/Natural Characteristics
Fourth graders are turning their focus to geography, examining both human-made and natural characteristics of different regions. They will explore how these features shape the way people live and interact with their environment.
5th Grade: Explorers of the World
Fifth graders are taking a journey back in time to learn about Spanish, French, English, and Dutch explorers. They will study the impact these explorers had on the world and the historical significance of their travels.
Library
Students in grades K-2 will be participating in the Star of the North book award challenge. This award is a special book award for Minnesota kids. Over the next few months, we will read 10 nominated picture books together. In the spring, students will have the opportunity to select the winning book by casting their vote for their favorite one!
Students in grades 3-5 have learned about the Maud Hart Lovelace book award. This is a Minnesota book award given to a high quality chapter book voted on by students. Any student who reads at least 3 of the 10 nominated books by the end of March will get to vote for their favorite one! Ask your child how they can earn a pizza party by readIng 9-10 of the books and completing a book reflection for each book read!
Music
Kindergarten and first grade are learning many new songs and have started to create their own actions to go along with the music. They have also been playing the drums and working on keeping a steady beat.
2nd grade through 5th grade have all been hard at work practicing on mallet instruments like xylophones and glockenspiels. They have each learned to play a few different songs and are now starting to choose other percussion instruments to add in alongside the xylophones.

Happy Fall from the Health Office!
Hearing screenings will be completed for Kindergarten and hearing and vision screenings will be completed in grades 1, 3, and 5 this Fall.
1 in 4 school age children have vision difficulties, and many children will have hearing changes associated with ear infections, illness, wax build up or other causes that affect their ability to learn at school. Identifying these children early is a focus of the health teams in the district.
If there are any concerns after the screening is completed about your child's hearing or vision, the school nurse will contact you. If you have any concerns about your child's hearing or vision, please contact the school nurse at any time to request a screening.
As we go into the winter months, this is a great time to consider Flu or Covid vaccines for your family.

Parent Education and Family Engagement
Happy November! This month, we're focusing on executive function and behavior - an important skill that will help your children in school and in life. Our newsletter has plenty of ideas and activities to support your children's executive functioning. Another way you can support this skill is through consistent routines. Focusing on keeping the same times for meals/snacks, bedtimes, and wake ups will help your children to be more regulated and ready to learn! For extra information on routines, please see our Take Home Tip: Benefits of Routines.

Hello Dayton families!
My name is Shantae (Sh-Ann-Tay-EE) Webber, I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapy (LMFT). I work for People Incorporated and am the new mental health therapist at Dayton Elementary!
My work at Dayton is aligned with outpatient mental health services someone would receive in a clinic setting. The great thing about being able to work in a school is the ease in access to connecting with students during the school day which can reduce stress related to work and/or activity schedules. I typically meet with students 1x/week for 40-45 minutes (subject to increase/decrease on a case-by-case basis) as an added support to not only their school experiences but also their experiences outside of the classroom.
I will be working closely with Michele Lange (School Counselor) to best serve the students of Dayton throughout this school year and beyond. If you have questions about the service I provide or are interested in services for your child(ren), please feel free to reach out to me or Michele.
I'm excited to be here!
