Looking Ahead to Next Year: Updates on Our 4th/5th Grade Immersion Blends
Dear Families,
I'd like to share some important updates about our 4th and 5th grade immersion classes for the upcoming school year. As you may recall, our staffing allocation from the district requires us to transition from four teachers across 3rd and 4th grades to a model with three teachers covering both 4th and 5th grades. This change means we will implement 4th/5th grade blended immersion classrooms next year.
I understand that change can bring questions, and I want to be transparent and informative as we move forward together.
Why the Shift?
This new structure is part of a district-wide effort to maximize the impact of our educators. By moving to blended classrooms in several schools, the district was able to open up approximately 15 full-time positions that are now serving as interventionists and assistant principals. These critical roles are helping meet student needs across the district, especially in schools where support is needed most.
What Does This Mean for Instruction?
The district has developed clear guidance to support schools in making this transition successfully. Our top priority remains ensuring that every student receives rigorous, developmentally appropriate instruction that meets their individual needs.
Here’s what this will look like in practice:
-
Literacy Instruction: Rising 5th grade students have already experienced the 4th grade literacy curriculum. Therefore, in blended classrooms next year, 5th grade literacy units will be taught with a focus on 5th grade standards for 5th graders and 4th grade standards for 4th graders. The following year, the structure will flip: 4th grade units will be taught to 5th graders with an emphasis on 5th grade standards.
-
Math Instruction: Students will receive instruction aligned to their grade level in math, with differentiated support to ensure all learners can succeed.
-
Central Support: The district’s central office is actively supporting schools with blended classrooms through resources and ongoing collaboration.
Our Commitment to You
We know that every student is unique, and we are committed to making sure each child gets what they need to thrive. Our teachers are planning thoughtfully and creatively, using the district’s guidance and their own expertise to make this a successful and enriching experience for all students.
We appreciate your trust, partnership, and continued support as we prepare for this transition. If you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out or join our upcoming principal chats—we’re here to work together for your child’s success.
Warmly,
Niki
Beach Principal
