Cougar Connect Community Edition
February 19 - March 1
Principal Arellano's Post
We are officially half way through 3rd quarter and our students continue to amaze me with their growth. Please know that we value student growth and are focused on what is best for our students. Attendance is vital in growing our students. No work sheet or computer app can replace the quality instruction that our students recieve under the helm of our committed teachers. We ask that you partner with us and communicate the importance of school to your students. We have important state and local testing coming up in April and want to be sure our students feel prepared! Student attendance is vital in deveopling students who are prepared for their future.
However, we know that sickness does occur. Please continue to keep your students home if they are sick, as we want to keep our community healthy. We ask that students are fever and vomit free without medication for 24 hours before returning to school. Communicate the importance of frequent hand washing with your student to help mitigate the spread of germs and illness. We want our students healthy and we want them gowing in school!
Thank you for your continued partnership in growing students socially and academically!

Habits of Success Focus: Self Efficacy
ROARS Focus: Attitude
Self Efficacy helps our students in the following ways:
Teaching the skill of self-efficacy to elementary students is crucial for their overall development and academic success. Educators can support the development of self-efficacy in elementary students by providing constructive feedback, encouraging effort and persistence, offering challenging yet achievable tasks, and helping students recognize and celebrate their successes. By fostering self-efficacy, educators contribute to the overall well-being and success of their students.
Here are ways in which teaching self-efficacy supports elementary students:
Increased Motivation: Students with a strong sense of self-efficacy are more motivated to take on challenging tasks. They believe in their ability to succeed, which fuels their motivation to put in effort and persevere through difficulties.
Positive Academic Performance: When students believe they can succeed, they are more likely to approach learning with a positive attitude. This positive mindset contributes to improved academic performance as they are willing to engage in tasks, set goals, and work towards achieving them.
Resilience in the Face of Challenges: Self-efficacious students are better equipped to handle setbacks and challenges. They view obstacles as opportunities to learn and grow, rather than insurmountable barriers. This resilience is a valuable skill that helps them navigate the ups and downs of their academic journey.
Effective Goal Setting: Developing self-efficacy involves setting realistic and achievable goals. Teaching students how to set and attain these goals helps them build confidence in their ability to influence their own success. It also fosters a sense of autonomy and control over their learning.
Improved Problem-Solving Skills: Students with a strong sense of self-efficacy are more likely to approach problems as challenges to be solved rather than insurmountable hurdles. They develop effective problem-solving skills and are willing to try different strategies until they find a solution.
Enhanced Social Skills: Self-efficacy is not limited to academic tasks; it extends to social situations. Students who believe in their ability to interact positively with peers are more likely to engage in social activities, leading to the development of strong interpersonal skills.
Greater Emotional Well-being: A sense of self-efficacy contributes to emotional well-being. Students who believe in their capabilities experience less anxiety and stress, as they approach challenges with confidence and a positive mindset.
Encourages a Growth Mindset: Teaching self-efficacy aligns with the principles of a growth mindset, where individuals believe that their abilities can be developed through effort and persistence. This mindset fosters a love for learning and a willingness to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.
Circle prompts that focus on Self Efficacy:
"Share a task or activity you recently completed that made you feel proud of yourself. What did you do well, and how did you contribute to your success?"
"Think about a subject or skill you find challenging. What steps can you take to improve in that area, and how can you build confidence in your ability to understand or master it?"
"Share a goal you have for yourself, whether it's related to academics, sports, or a personal interest. What small steps can you take to work toward achieving that goal?"
"Reflect on a time when you thought you couldn't do something, but you eventually succeeded. What changed your mindset, and how can you apply this positive thinking to other challenges?"
"Describe a skill or talent you would like to develop. How can you break down the learning process into smaller, manageable steps, and what resources or support might you need?"
"Think about a time when you received constructive feedback. How did you use that feedback to improve, and how did it impact your confidence in your abilities?"
"Discuss a classmate or friend who faced a challenge and persevered. What qualities did they demonstrate, and how can you adopt similar strategies when facing your own challenges?"
"Share a time when you took the initiative to learn something new independently. How did this experience impact your confidence in your ability to learn on your own?"
"Imagine you are faced with a new and challenging project. What steps can you take to break it down into smaller tasks, and how can you approach each task with confidence?"
"Share a story about someone you look up to. What qualities or actions make them successful, and how can you incorporate some of those qualities into your own life?"
"Imagine you have a magic wand that can help you overcome any challenge. What strategies or skills would you 'magically' acquire to feel more confident and capable?"
New Kiss and Go Pickup Procedures
Starting the week of 12/11 changes will be coming to the kiss and go pick-up lanes in the afternoon. To help with the flow of traffic in the community on Defoe Ave. and Caballero Ave. We ask that parents/ guardians not park on the south side sidewalk of the kiss and go parking lot. We will be using the area along the sidewalk as the line for overflow pick-up cars. Attached is a map of kiss and go parking lot.
-The yellow is the flow of the kiss and go lanes
-The red will be a no parking zone
-The blue will be for the overflow of cars waiting to enter the kiss and go parking lot
For the safety of the kids please do not have kids cross the kiss and go exit to load into the cars waiting in overflow. Please pull up to the yellow line in the parking lot to pick up your up students. Please be patient. When leaving kiss and go it is prohibited to turn left.
