Teachers: Pursuing an Advanced Degree?
The Graduate Credit & Degree Advancement (GCDA) process in the Sioux Falls School District allows certified employees to pursue salary advancements by completing approved graduate-level courses or programs. A GCDA Pre-Approval Committee meets monthly to review all coursework and degree programs to ensure rigor and relevancy related to salary advancement.
The process involves two steps:
- Staff Development oversees the GCDA Committee’s review of courses and master’s programs, and
- Human Resources handles salary advancement applications.
Courses must be from an accredited institution, meet relevancy and rigorous standards, and can be reviewed before, during, or after enrollment. Programs must align with the employee’s job assignment or lead to additional certification. Employees are responsible for meeting all deadlines and submitting required documentation.
For more details, visit GCDA Guidelines or contact Velina.Onate-Nelson@k12.sd.us in Staff Development and Amira.Lawrence@k12/sd/us in HR.

A New Way to Approach New Years Resolutions
Looking for a new way to stick to your resolutions? Think about focusing on sustainable change and meaningful progress. The Mindful Micro-Momentum Method, as mentioned in Psychology Today, removes the pressure of “all or nothing.” By focusing on small, intentional actions you can easily maintain, you build momentum that compounds over time. The result? Sustainable change and meaningful progress.
1. Start Small, Think Big: Set clear goals but break them down into tiny, manageable steps. Instead of overwhelming yourself with massive tasks, focus on a single micro-action to create momentum.
- Example Resolution: “I want to improve my fitness.”
- Micro-Momentum Step: Start with 5 minutes of stretching or walking every morning.
2. Anchor New Habits to Existing Routines: Link your micro-actions to habits you already perform daily. Anchoring makes new habits easier to adopt.
- Example Resolution: “I want to practice mindfulness.”
- Micro-Momentum Step: Take 3 deep breaths while waiting for your morning coffee to brew.
3. Focus on Consistency, Not Perfection: The power of micro-momentum comes from consistency, not intensity. Celebrate small wins and keep going—even on “off” days.
- Example Resolution: “I want to read more books this year.”
- Micro-Momentum Step: Read 2 pages before bed every night. Even if you’re tired, 2 pages keeps the momentum alive.
4. Reflect and Refine Weekly: Mindfully check in on your progress each week. Ask: What worked? What felt challenging? Make tiny adjustments to keep momentum flowing.
- Example Resolution: “I want to save more money.”
- Micro-Momentum Step: Track small expenses once a week, such as skipping a daily coffee and transferring $3 to savings.
5. Celebrate Tiny Wins: Every micro-step matters. Acknowledge progress, no matter how small—it strengthens motivation and reinforces the habit.
- Example Resolution: “I want to prioritize self-care.”
- Micro-Momentum Step: Dedicate 5 minutes each day to journaling or listening to a relaxing song. Celebrate that moment as time invested in yourself.
6. Stay Present and Patient: Micro-momentum thrives on mindfulness. Focus on one small action at a time, avoiding overwhelm. By staying present, you cultivate patience and trust in the process.
- Example Resolution: “I want to declutter my home.”
- Micro-Momentum Step: Declutter one drawer or one shelf a week instead of tackling the whole house at once.
