Happy Friday LFHS,
There is nothing better than a Friday with a beautiful weekend ahead!
In last week’s Fanscout, we put the reminder of our Confidential Reporting Tool in the general announcements. The CRT is an important tool that allows for members of our community to report any suspicious activity, and it is vital that we all remain vigilant. This past week, we saw another school shooting in Georgia, and these devastating and senseless acts are often followed by a heightened awareness in our nation’s schools. My hope is that our school community embraces If You See Something, Say Something–and we always keep our ear to the ground. These students are our community’s hope, promise, and future, and keeping them safe has to remain our priority.
The video message above includes a couple of important announcements and a guest star—take a look, and I look forward to seeing you next Thursday at Open House!
All my best,
Erin

Illinois State Board of Education Moves from SAT to ACT
Earlier this summer, the Illinois State Board of Education announced it is switching from the SAT to the ACT for the yearly high school assessment required by and paid for by the state.
LFHS Assistant Principal Frank Lesniak presented information about this change to the District 115 Education Committee on Tuesday. Highlights of that report are shared below:
The State of Illinois will now use the ACT as the College Readiness and High School Proficiency indicator, and all Illinois schools will follow suit.
The shift was sudden and surprising, but our team has worked behind the scenes this summer to make sure our structures provide opportunities for our students to do well.
ECRA, one of our data providers, has provided correlation data to the ACT for students who already have PSATs. We are using this in our first year.
We have developed our own in-house tool that we plan to provide to our juniors, as well. More to come on that.
We will still administer the PSAT/NMSQT to juniors, and it will be optional. This is a merit and scholarship qualifier, so we don't want to limit this opportunity.
There is more to share and more to plan, and Mr. Lesniak will provide an update as the fall progresses.

STEAM Scholar Program
The STEAM Scholar Program is an exciting educational opportunity launched by Congressman Brad Schneider in 2018 for high school students in our community. The program aims to connect highly-motivated students interested in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics with hands-on learning experiences throughout our district.
In the fall, students selected to participate in the STEAM Scholars program will have the opportunity to join Congressman Schneider on visits to four STEAM-related businesses and facilities during the 2024-2025 school year. On these visits, students will have the chance to participate in discussions with local employees, business owners, and educators, and learn more about the STEAM career opportunities in our backyard.
