Financial Literacy Seminar
From our Nurse
Students entering 12th grade are required to have a second dose of the MCV4 vaccine. A second dose is administered after your student's 16th birthday. Immunization compliance is required by September 9, 2024 in order to avoid school exclusion. If your student has not already received this vaccine, please make arrangements with your healthcare provider. If you do not have health insurance, an appointment can be made by contacting the Bucks County Department of Health at 267-580-3510, at no cost to you. PSEA-”Touch the Future” Art Show Winners
Truman had 2 award winners in the prestigious PSEA-”Touch the Future” art show.
This show is a juried show representing area high schools in Bucks and Montgomery County.

Jesse won the “Purchase Award” Jesse will receive $150 and his photo will be displayed in the
PSEA southeastern offices.

Color Guard Moves Up In Class
The Truman had back-to-back 1st place performances at Council Rock and Central Bucks South. This is the first year the Guard moved up in class, making their wins even more impressive. Congratulations to all the Guard members and their coaches!

School Counselor's Office
In February, more than 30 students participated in the Bucks County Community College Financial Literacy & Leadership field trip.
The guidance department is actively arranging meetings with students to discuss their course selections, including both the courses they've chosen and those they've been recommended for. All underclass students will meet with their guidance counselors to ensure the completion of the course selection process.

B-E-T (Business, Engineering, Technology)
CSP students recreated the classic game Connect 4 in Python (image attached)
CSA students are using Java to create a Hangman/Wheel of Fortune-style game
FOE students are starting to prepare for the onShape certification exam and are currently designing Articulated 3D models for printing.
In Ms. Hassey's Business Management class, students are working on creating Wix Websites for their business plans and learning about the complexities of management, uncovering the various levels of management, along with their corresponding duties and responsibilities. This engaging curriculum equips students with essential knowledge and skills vital for future leadership roles in the business world.
Mr. Mergard's Business Management students are currently working on a Virtual Business Simulation where they learn how to run their own Hotel. Students learn about the Laws of Supply and Demand, Room Pricing, Customer Service, Competition, the Importance of Social Media Feedback, and many other important concepts.
Intro to Business students learn how businesses and the economy work together, and understanding different types of ownership, students get important knowledge and skills to handle business challenges well. This helps them make smart choices, start their own businesses if they want to, and help the economy grow in the future.

English
English 9: Students are still working on a unit focusing on poetry, with an emphasis on figurative language, and will be moving onto a unit focusing on propaganda, and working on identifying the techniques used in its creation. There will also be a continued focus on utilizing the R.A.C.E.S. strategy for writing constructed responses. Students will continue making progress on their personalized Reading Exact Path.
English 10: Students are finishing up a unit that emphasizes the skill set of identifying the theme and/or main idea of a text. The students will now be moving into a unit focused on the different types of irony used in literature. Students will also be examining numerous reading and writing strategies in preparation for the Keystone Exams. Students will continue making progress on their personalized Reading Exact Path.
English 11: Students have finished Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck., with an emphasis on the historical setting of the novel, which occurs during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Now the junior classes will begin with literature from the time period surrounding the Civil War, which includes many realistic stories based upon real events. Additionally, students will also be reading Flowers for Algernon or another selected novel.
English 12: Students have finished the Shakespearean tragedy, The Tragedy of Macbeth. Now the students have been examining the time period known as “The Restoration” and the 18th century. This period includes the well-known piece “A Modest Proposal,” by Jonathon Swift, with which the students will examine satire and rhetoric, or “The Bet,” by Anton Chekov.
Health & PE
Driver Education
Driver Education students have successfully finished the driver responsibility and alcohol units, gaining knowledge on proper conduct and responses when pulled over by the police. Subsequently, they underwent field sobriety checks—first under normal conditions and then with the use of "drunk goggles" for a realistic experience. Currently, students are embarking on the road signs unit, delving into various types and categories of road signs.
Adapted PE
Mr. Sicilia and the Adaptive PE class have dedicated their focus to various motor skills, finding particular success with relay races that have captured the students' enthusiasm. Volleyball and basketball have also been enjoyable activities incorporated into the curriculum. Last week, we were thrilled to take the class outdoors, and we're looking forward to more warm weather ahead!
Physical Education
Spirit Night is just around the corner on March 7th. Students have been diligently practicing for the events during PE class on Wednesdays, and anticipation is building for what promises to be a fantastic night.
Meanwhile, PE students are starting to venture outdoors. Please ensure they come prepared with appropriate clothing for outdoor activities. Classes will head outside when the temperature is 50 degrees or higher. Additionally, please note that Pacer days are scheduled for Thursdays.
Health and Wellness
In Health and Wellness, students are presently engaged in a social media unit, exploring the advantages and disadvantages of technology. Shortly, they will commence a sex education unit.
Math
As the strong winds of March blow through Levittown, Truman math students are engaged in a plethora of topics across the curriculum. Many of our Algebra 1A students are in the midst of a unit on linear inequalities, and are preparing to graph linear functions. In preparation for the upcoming Spring Keystone exams, our Algebra 1 classes are diving into the study of polynomials. Honors Geometry is currently studying inequalities in triangles and the relationship between the length of a side of a triangle and the degree measure of its opposite angle. In Algebra 2, students are graphing parabolas and learning about imaginary numbers (they’re not real). Pre-Calculus students are focused on the period and amplitude of trigonometric functions. In Intro to College Math, students are solving quadratic equations using a variety of methods. Applied Math students have completed a unit on compound interest and investments, and are moving on to a project where they will research the process of buying a car.

Science
In Environmental Science, students have been learning about fossil fuels and climate change. In Earth and Space Science, students have been learning about Newton's Laws of Motion, Kepler's Laws, rocket engines, astrobiology, and students just began a unit on the atmosphere.
In Honors Biology 2, students were exploring the evolutionary diversity of the Protist Kingdom. Students examined Protozoans, Algae, and Slime Molds, while explaining how these organisms laid the evolutionary foundation for animals, plans, and fungi.
In Sport and Exercise Physiology, students were researching physiological adaptations to exercise and the stress-adaptation cycle of training. For a summative assignment, students examined a weekly training plan for an athlete of their choosing. They will then explain how that athlete applies stress to the body over time and the physiological adaptations that occur in response.
In Microbiology, students were studying the structure and characteristics of viruses. In AP Biology they were examining how traits are inherited and factors that affect phenotypes.
In Honors Chemistry we are examining chemical reactions and learning about formula writing and nomenclature. Students conducted two laboratory experiments to determine the empirical formulas of compounds using mole calculations.
Biology students in Ms.Lutz and Ms.Spillers classes started a unit on Cell Reproduction by extracting DNA from strawberries!
Social Studies
Mr. Kotofsky’s American Pop Culture classes learned about the evolution of cell phones which included some hands-on learning as students passed around many vintage cell phones like the Dynatac “brick” phone, bag phones, and flip phones.
9th Grade Western Civilizations classes examined the impact of nationalism in Europe during the 1800s. Students are beginning a unit on World War I.
11th grade Civics and Government classes examined the topic of civil rights and are currently learning about political parties.
Ms. Wright’s AP World History classes conducted a digital gallery walk to study anti-colonial resistance movements.
Ms. Currie's Government classes created cereal boxes honoring a president after completing research.
World Language
Hola, Ciao, and Hello! Spring is right around the corner!
Classroom Corner
Signorina Lezzi’s Italian classes recently enjoyed a screen free day of writing stories in Italian about love and friendship.
Spanish 2 is learning how to use direct object pronouns. All of our classes continue to build fluency through reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Travel & Curriculum News: We are working on a new program for heritage speakers in Spanish to launch in the 2024-2025 school year. Señor Matwijec and Señorita Broggi attended a portion of the NECTFL conference in NYC. This annual regional conference brings language teachers from the entire northeast region together to share best practices, new activities, and attend a vendor fair for all professional development needs.

NHS sponsors sporting goods donation drive - March 4-April 4
Truman's chapter of National Honor Society has teamed up with Leveling the Playing Field to host a donation drive for used sports equipment. Get a jump on your spring cleaning and uncover items that your child may have outgrown or no longer need. You will be helping financially disadvantaged children to be able to participate in sports. View the list of equipment we can and cannot accept here. Have your student bring your donations to school. Thank you for your support!
