Superintendent's Message
Violet Nichols
November 7, 2024
Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff,
Apologies for any confusion or missed messages today! Due to a fire at our servers in Southern Vermont, we had a district-wide Internet outage that should hopefully be resolved by tomorrow.
I’d like to send a heartfelt thank you to our teachers, staff, and administrators who, post election, and all on all weeks, created welcoming environments for all students, made time for them to share thoughts, feelings, opinions, and most of all, made them feel a part of our pack, regardless of their views. Thank you!
Last week, RMCS celebrated the unveiling of Dattilio Drive in a wonderful ceremony that honored how beloved Sue Dattilio is to the school and the community. Students on the Street Naming Committee led the parade of the whole school before Sue arrived in style. Principal Lissa McDonald, City Councilor Tim Barritt and 5th grade student Camila Pineda gave lovely speeches before the new street sign was unveiled. Thank you to the students who participated in the Street Naming Committee, the City Council for allowing the students to choose a name, and to all the city staff who made this possible. Thank you to all those who came to celebrate the unveiling of Dattilio Drive!

Student Spotlight: FHTMS Student Council
Staff Spotlight: Amy Blauvelt
At Convocation in August, Amy Blauvelt, Librarian and Media Specialist at FHTMS, was awarded the Vermont Outstanding Educator Award and today was the award ceremony at UVM. In her speech in August, Principal Suzanne Greundling said the following:
“Every day, she goes above and beyond to ensure that our students and staff have access to the resources they need to learn, grow, and succeed. She knows that education is about more than just academics; it’s about making meaningful, lasting connections. And she does just that—day in and day out. As the coordinator of our school's Educational Support Team, she works tirelessly to see that each student is given access to the services they need to thrive. She makes sure no one falls through the cracks, dedicating herself to ensuring equity and opportunity for all. That’s who she is— giving her all, and then some. She draws you into learning more, igniting your curiosity and passion for knowledge. She never stops learning herself. Her enthusiasm for education is contagious, and her dedication to all things Tuttle Middle School is clear.”
Congratulations Amy and thank you for everything you do!
FY26 Budget
After a very hard budget season last year, we face yet another. We must come together to support our teachers, administrators, students, and families during this process. Honesty, transparency, predictability, and kindness will be important for us all to hold. As we embark on development, I would like to share a bit more about our budget process:
All principals will work with their full staff to get budget feedback. From there, principals will submit prosed budget line items, proposed reductions, and proposed staff reductions to Kristin Romick, Monica Desrochers, Jody Vallaincourt, Tim Jarvis, April Jennings and me. In conjunction with school-based and principal feedback, we will review feedback from the community survey and evaluate student social and emotional learning (SEL) and achievement results. Next, we will incorporate Board direction, and the budget factors of real estate-inflation and tax information. We will then put forward a budget that aligns with our ENDS Policy, Equity Policy, and other Board policies, as well as the law: Act 173 (special ed. and MTSS), Act 139 (literacy), and equity supports (as required by the AOE).
We also want to hear feedback from our community. If you’d take the time to fill out this Budget survey, it would be greatly appreciated. Please submit your feedback by November 13th.
You can also continue to visit the Budget FY26 page on our website for additional budget information.

Transportation Update from Operations Director, Jean-Marie Clark
We are excited to welcome Greg Tuffy to the transportation team. Greg was a true rockstar. With no previous experience, he was able to get his school bus license in just one month! Kudos to Greg and his trainers at the Bus Depot!
With the addition of Greg, and our other new drivers, we are now able to run all our routes with no cancellations! It has taken us a long time to get to this point. We are so grateful to our team of drivers and trainers, as well as our parents and community members, for your partnership and patience. We understand the hardship this has placed on parents, students and caregivers. Thank you for your patience, your suggestions and your work with your neighbors to get all our students to school each day. We do ask that you continue to watch the Transportation Dashboard
and your email for any route cancellations related to driver illness, weather, traffic, etc.
As we ramp up our Transportation team, we will also be reviewing our routes to look for efficiencies and changes to get all students to school and events as seamlessly as possible. With any changes or updates we make to the routes, there could be adjustments to pick-up or drop-off times. We will communicate any changes to families through email.
We are always looking for substitute van drivers and bus monitors. These positions are VERY flexible and can work with any availability you’d like to offer. No special license is needed, and no long-term commitment is required! Just want to help out your community? Give back by helping transport children around our district!
Here are some of our drivers celebrating Halloween last week!
Visit our Transportation Update page for up to date information.
For questions and concerns about transportation, please contact Stephanie Hyatt, Transportation Dispatcher. Stephanie is the point of contact for families with questions about transportation in-the-moment. She can be reached at 802-233-0673. You can also call the bus garage at 802-652-7479. For general questions, please reach out to Jean-Marie Clark, Operations Director, at jclark@sbschools.net.
