Parent Committee is Inviting You!
The Fargo/West Fargo Native American Education Parent Committee (NAEPC) will be meeting to hold their biennial parent committee elections on Monday, November 13, 2023, at 6 p.m. We will be meeting in person at the Fargo Public Schools District Office, 700 7th Street South, Fargo, in room 87 or you can join the meeting via Zoom , Click here to join the meeting Meeting ID: 222 739 774 608, Passcode: FHv9Rv. Native American Education Program Update
- The Native American Education Program took our Fargo & West Fargo Public Schools student's grades 9-12 to NDSU's Indigenous Students Day on October 26. It was a fun day for all students as they attended a recourse fair, a presentation by Holly Mackey following a college tour. We had 64 students in attendance that had the opportunity to experience what NDSU has to offer.
November is federally recognized as National Native American Heritage Month. This is a time to appreciate and celebrate the rich culture, traditions and history of Native American people, and to acknowledge the vast contributions we have made to the World
Facts
➢ There are 574 federally recognized tribes in the United States. Each tribe has their own language, culture, songs and stories.
➢ Approximately 71 percent of Native American live in metropolitan areas.
➢ Much of our history has been forgotten or overlooked, so November serves as a time to provide education on America’s Indigenous People.
Local facts
➢ There are over 30 tribes represented in Fargo and West Fargo Public Schools from all over the United States and Canada.
➢ We have approximately 1100 students in FPS and WFPS that identify as Native American.

Ricky White, FPS Native American Cultural Specialist shares teachings and activities across Fargo Public Schools to all students in grades k-12 during Native American Heritage Month!
MSUM Celebrations
🌟 Wednesday, November 1
12:00 PM- Opening Pipe Ceremony (Library Porch)
Delvin Rogers will conduct a traditional pipe ceremony to welcome in American Indian Heritage month on the MSUM campus. Delvin Rogers is a traditional pipe carrier and member of the Three Affiliated Tribes in North Dakota.
4:30 PM- Book Discussion: Sinister Graves (Library Porch)
Join us for light refreshments and a discussion of Sinister Graves by Marcie Rendon.
Set in 1970s Minnesota on the White Earth Reservation, Pinckley Prize–winner Marcie R. Rendon’s gripping new mystery follows Cash Blackbear, a young Ojibwe woman, as she attempts to discover the truth about the disappearances of Native girls and their newborns.

Tribal Nation Flag Display (Comstock Memorial Union Sungarden)
This tribal nation flag display not only recognizes the heritage and cultures representative of MSUM's American Indian students but also features informative descriptions, including details about each tribe and tribal flag. This presentation offers an insight into the rich diversity and unique identities of these indigenous communities.

4:30 PM- ODI Signature Series: Indigenous Author Talk with Marcie Rendon (Comstock Memorial Union 105)
Award-winning indigenous author Marcie Rendon will share insights about her life, the process of writing her books, and the driving forces behind creating the Cash Blackbear mystery series. During her presentation, she will also conduct a reading from her latest book, Sinister Graves. At the conclusion of her talk, Ms. Rendon will be available for a book signing session.
Rock Your Mocs!
Rock Your Mocs is a worldwide American Indian & Indigenous Peoples social media event. Wear your moccasins, take a photo, video or story, add the hashtags #ROCKYOURMOCS and #RockYourMocs2023 and upload to social media.

3:00 PM- Living in Balance – Anishinaabe Star Knowledge (MSUM Planetarium, Bridges 167)
Narrated by Native Skywatchers, Anishinaabe Star Knowledge highlights Anishinaabe stories of constellations and moons in relation to contemporary insights about environmental changes, emphasizing how the environment and its changes affect star knowledge.

While all events are free, the Planetarium's 'Living in Balance' event is an exception, members of the public will need to purchase tickets.

Hjemkomst Museum Native American Events & Exhibit
Away from Home: American Indian Boarding School Stories traveling exhibit will be at the Hjemkomst Museum from November 10th, 2023 - January 7th, 2024.
November 14th at 6:00pm will be an opening reception following a presentation by Dr. Denise Lajimodiere on her book Stringing Rosaries
