Weekly Update Newsletter
Friday, Sept. 2, 2022
Hello LLR Families,
We are off to a great start! Our Grades 1-9 students filled the building this week with lots of smiles and laughter and we are looking forward to having our kindergarten students join us next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. Junior High Athletics are underway with volleyball tryouts and Cross Country. Please check our school website and Athletics Calendar for the most up-to-date information.
This Wednesday, September 7 is Early Dismissal. Students will be dismissed at 2:10 pm which is an hour earlier than our regular bell schedule. Wednesday is also “wear your school colours day”. Students are encouraged to wear their “wolf wear” or dress in their school colours (black, burgundy, charcoal, and white). Every early dismissal day is also Cash 4 Care Day. We collect donations for a selected charity throughout the year. We are currently working on choosing a charity for this year. We will update you when we have solidified our plans.
Have a wonderful long weekend!

Hello from LLR Athletics!
Want to know when things are happening? We have an athletics calendar on the LLR school website.
https://www.lakelandridge.ca/athletics/athletics-calendar
Please visit often as our Athletics staff will update as often as they can.
Trying out for teams!
For our team sports, Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton, and Team Handball, there is a tryout permission form. This form's main purpose is to ensure you as a parent are aware your child is attempting to make a team where there will be team fees associated with it. It also allows the coaching staff to know that they can safely make selections knowing that they have all the correct information on potential players and their availability to play. This form only needs to be signed once a year and covers all team sports tryouts.
Volleyball tryouts are underway. The Sr teams are geared towards grades 8 and 9, however, grade 7s are welcome to tryout and at the very least get a head start on the Jr tryouts. Our Jr coaches are usually helping with tryouts.
Jr tryouts will begin next week once the Sr teams begin making selections.
Volleyball teams will have 2-3 practices a week and 1-2 league games with weekend tournaments. All tournaments currently scheduled are on the Athletics Calendar.
Cross Country will practice twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays.
Can you be on more than one team at a time? YES! Our coaches are more than willing to help our students achieve their goals in all the sports they choose to try for, even if they are at the same time. For more information watch our athletics website and calendar and most importantly, have your child listen to morning announcements.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

School Council Meeting
Our first School Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 13 at 6:30 pm. Parents/Caregivers will have the option to attend in person in our Learning Commons (library) or virtually using "Microsoft Teams". School Council is a collective association of parents, teachers, and administrators who work together for the betterment of the school community. Among other important roles, the School Council dialogues with the principal on a variety of school matters. We will be selecting our School Council Executive for the 2022-23 school year at our first meeting. The agenda and link for the meeting can be found on our school website.

Parking Lot
During the last two years, staff from Children Services have not been in the building, so visitors may have been using their parking spaces. Now that they are working in the building again, please remember to use the Visitor Parking only. Vehicles in the Government of Alberta spots may be tagged and towed. We will also have one additional bus picking up and dropping students off. This bus will park along the west side of Cranberry Way. Strathcona County will be installing signs shortly. As always, students are encouraged to use the crosswalks in the parking lot and when crossing the street. Visitors are asked to drive slowly and follow the Traffic Management Plan below. Thank you for your cooperation.
Update your PowerSchool information
The EIPS Correction and Verification Form is now available online through your PowerSchool Parent Portal. Use the form to access and update your child’s records information—including address, parent and guardian information, emergency contacts and medical information. Reviewing the form and submitting updates ensures the school has the most up-to-date information regarding your child.
When reviewing the form, pay close attention to all listed phone numbers, email addresses and emergency contact information. Also, if you recently moved, now is the time to ensure the Division has your updated address. Throughout the year, the Division and school uses the listed information to communicate with families about important information, including updates, the latest news and event.
EIPS Correction and Verification Form
Review and update the form by Sept. 22, 2022.
For more information about the PowerSchool Correction and Verification Form, contact the school office at 780-416-9018.
Pay School fees online!
School fee information for the 2022-23 school year will be posted on the PowerSchool Parent Portal in late September. All fees are due within 30 days of being posted. To access your fee information, simply log in to the PowerSchool Parent Portal and go to “Student Fees.” There you can view your fees and pay online using a credit card.
Don’t forget to log in to the PowerSchool Parent Portal regularly throughout the year. Fees are often added to your child’s account to cover the cost of certain school activities such as field trips, class projects, athletic-team fees and more. Additionally, junior high and senior high fees can change as courses are added and deleted.
If you’re unable to pay your school fees, you can apply to have certain fees waived by submitting an Application for a Waiver of Fees. The application deadline is Dec. 15, 2022.
For more information about school fees, waivers and payment deadlines visit eips.ca. Alternatively, contact Cathy Eyben at Lakeland Ridge School at 780-416-9018.
Download the SchoolMessenger App
Lakeland Ridge School and the Division use the SchoolMessenger platform for communicating with families—through both phone and email. Be sure to add communications@eips.ca and amy.desaulniers@eips.ca to your safe sender list to avoid having important messages funneled into your junk mail folder.
The easiest way to stay connected is to download the SchoolMessenger app. Get the latest updates direct to your mobile device and enable push notifications to never miss a message. Families can also check back on past messages—for up to 30 days—directly in the app rather than searching to find an old message buried in your inbox. Download the SchoolMessenger app from the App Store or Google Play today.
Coming soon—the Safe Arrivals absence reporting tool will be rolled out within the SchoolMessenger app later this school year. Families will be able to quickly and easily report a child’s absence directly in the app. No more phone calls or emails required. Stay tuned for updates in the coming months.
Improving home-school communication
To enhance communication between families and schools, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) created a how-to guide entitled, Communication Protocol for Schools. Topics include:
· appropriate channels to use;
· standard formats and structures;
· timing and sequencing for regular and ongoing home-school communication; and
· ways to bring forward questions or concerns.
The guide also offers useful tools and resources schools, and families can use to enhance face-to-face meetings, email communication and various social media efforts. EIPS encourages all families and schools to review the guide at:
Video surveillance on buses
Did you know each EIPS bus is equipped with video surveillance?
Video surveillance and equipment help:
· ensure the safety of all students, drivers and property; and
· discourage destructive acts.
Regularly basis, EIPS Student Transportation reviews the video recordings, in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act. The recordings assist the department with monitoring student and driver conduct and may be used as evidence in a disciplinary matter.
For more information about the collection, use and disclosure of personal information, contact the EIPS FOIP Co-ordinator at 780-464-3477.
