ASSEMBLY - BENERGY1
Today students attended an assembly titled Benergy1. The presentation is titled "Never Let Go of Your Dreams" and chronicles a man’s (Ben) journey from being non-verbal at the age of 2 to being a full time public speaker today. It includes the message of persevering through difficulties, how kindness and inclusion matter and how to "Be the one" to make a difference. Thank you to the PTO for providing the opportunity for Ben to share his inspiring story with our GES students. Be sure to ask your child about it!
CONGRATULATIONS GES STUDENT AUTHOR ABBY KIRCHNER!
Goodnoe Elementary recently held a celebration for a new author, one of their very own 5th grade students, Abby Kirchner. Her story, The Human Kaboom, the One with the Ski Jumber's Cat, was recently published in New York Times bestselling author Adam Rubin's paperback book, The Human Kaboom. Adam Rubin visited Goodnoe last school year while on tour and inspired Goodnoe students to use their imaginations to write more stories. Her story was chosen out of hundreds submitted to the author. The school surprised their students in grades 3-5 and Abby, with a surprise author visit complete with a reading of her story by teachers, celebration songs and an author wall signing. Congratulations Abby!
MATH OLYMPIAD CONTEST RESULTS!
The Math Olympiad Contest official results are in! More than 90,000 top math students from all 50 states and 30 different countries participated in the Math Olympiad Contest this year. Students who participate in the Math Olympiad Contest use multiple strategies for out-of-the-box problem solving. They develop mathematical flexibility, creativity and ingenuity in solving the problems as well. All in all, a very high level of critical thinking is required of a student who performs well on this contest. Throughout the year, there are five contests, each consisting of five questions. Therefore, the most possible points a student can earn is 25 points.
Congratulations to the Goodnoe Elementary math enrichment students for earning the highest team honor a school can earn; top 10% of teams worldwide. A Math Olympiad plaque has been awarded to them.
A tremendous congratulations to Nathaniel Perry and Caleb Reilly who earned perfect scores on this year's contest. Nathaniel and Caleb have earned the prestigious George Lenchner Award. Other students who scored in the top 2% of students in the world include Adhruth Arvindhakshan, Michael Angelaccio, and Luca Priori. Finally, students who earned scores of 20 points or higher should be commended. An average of four points on each contest is no easy feat! Students from grades 4, 5 and 6 who achieved this include Jessica Wu, Safi Shaik, Albert Zelenin, Ryan He, Quinn Neuman, Luke Rubenstein, and Rishav Shah.

CAREER DAY!
Goodnoe Elementary School will be hosting Career Day on Monday, June 3. We offer this opportunity for parents within our school community to come into the classrooms to share insights about their careers and provide details about necessary education and training for their jobs. Career Day helps to expose students to a variety of careers to help jumpstart their thinking about the future by giving students a closer look at different career paths. It also helps to connect students’ learning to the real world by helping them learn about different career possibilities to explore for the future. We genuinely appreciate the support from parents and the many volunteers we have each year for this fun and educational event.
SCHOOL DRESS CODE REMINDERS!
Please see the CR policy on Dress and Grooming:
The Council Rock School District Board of School Directors has a policy in effect to monitor inappropriate attire. Attire and grooming can influence students’ attitudes towards themselves and their school. Council Rock students are urged to emphasize cleanliness, neatness, and generally acceptable good taste in their dress and grooming habits. In an effort to maintain an atmosphere that is most conducive to learning, student attire is expected to be appropriate for school.
Appropriate dress is that which is neither offensive nor distracting. It should not present a safety hazard or disruption to the learning environment. Clothing which advertises or promotes the use of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco products is not considered appropriate. Clothing that conveys in- appropriate messages is not permitted. Other types of inappropriate clothing include low riding jeans, tight/form-fitting fabric tops with exposed midriff/shoulders or straps less than three fingers in width, and very short skirts/shorts. Students will be warned about inappropriate clothing initially with a letter sent home from the school. In some cases, students may be asked to cover up the inappropriate clothing. A second incident will result in a phone call to parents. If incidents continue, parents will be asked to come to school to bring more appropriate attire for their child. In addition, students are strongly discouraged from wearing flip-flops or sandals to school. There is a high incidence of injuries related to students tripping while at recess and walking through the hallways when wearing these types of footwear and our aim is to provide an environment that is safe for all
READING TIDBITS & TIPS
We previously shared that Reading Horizons is the new ELA program being used in kindergarten through 2nd grades to teach phonemic and phonics foundational skills. Wonders is the other ELA program that was implemented this year in 1st through 5th grades. It is designed to help students meet high academic standards and prepare them for future success. Grades 1st through 2nd are using Wonders for the comprehension and writing components of instruction. Grades 3rd through 5th are using Wonders for all components of reading and writing instruction.
Students are reading and rereading short, complex texts. They are learning to take notes, ask and answer text-dependent questions, and cite text evidence. Over time, the goal is for students to transfer and apply what they have learned to other texts. Our Goodnoe students are working hard each and every day to grow their reading skills and become proficient readers and writers.
NATIONAL SPEECH LANGUAGE HEARING MONTH
Happy May! We are Melissa Sablowsky and Lauren Pascucci, the speech-language pathologists who serve the students of Goodnoe.
In honor of National Speech-Language-Hearing month we wanted to share a few recommendations for activities that your family can do at home to support your child’s speech, language, and cognitive skill development.
Invite your child into daily household chores and narrate what you are doing and why. This simple activity offers opportunities for vocabulary building, perspective taking, organization, planning, and the opportunity to practice their speech sounds.
Read books just for fun with your child! Try not to quiz your child on each page, let the fun unfold naturally.
Open-ended books such as You Choose allow children to be as creative as they’d like to be while developing speech and language skills. The series of books is wonderful because there is a theme that will surely catch every child’s interest! You can even go so far as to act out the story once your child has created it. The thing we love most about these books is that no two stories created are ever going to be the same. Kids can make different choices and see how that changes the outcome of their story! Just like life!

DENTALS & PHYSICALS
Per Pennsylvania state requirements, the health office requires a current physical examination form and dental form for all new incoming students. Physical exams are also required for all students entering 6th grade and dental exams are required for all students entering 3rd grade. We can accept any exam completed as early as July 1, 2023, per state regulations. This would include dental examinations for current 2nd grade students and physical examinations for current 5th graders dated after 07/07/23. These state forms can be found at crsd.org and can be submitted to katie.engelhardt@crsd.org.

LOST & FOUND ITEMS
Our lost and found has accumulated many articles of clothing over the last several months. All items will be on display outdoors during Field Day.
PARENTAL CONTROLS FOR DEVICES
These days most children have access to an iPhone or an iPad, whether it is their own device or one belonging to their parents. However, this could lead to the children being exposed to inappropriate content, online predators, and inappropriate text messaging. Therefore, parents need to provide guidance and take precautions. The easiest way to keep track of your children and their phone usage is to monitor the device and text messages. We also strongly suggest disabling group messaging on your child’s phone or ipad, as many inappropriate conversations occur on this type of messaging, which quickly escalate into conflict and drama. If there are conversations that lead to highly inappropriate content or cyberbullying, your child can be held accountable for being part of the conversation.
Below are links to help you set up parental control for your child’s apple or android device.
NO DOGS/PETS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS
When escorting students to and from school, please do not bring pets on school grounds or into the school building. Many of our children have pet allergies or are afraid of animals; therefore, the presence of animals in school or on school grounds is prohibited. Some classes at Goodnoe Elementary School do participate in the Nor’Wester Reading Dogs program, so on occasion you may see dogs visiting. These dogs are specially trained and licensed to work in the schools with students. No other animals are permitted on school property during school hours. Please refer to our board policy for more information on animals in school policy 718 https://go.boarddocs.com/pa/coun/Board.nsf/vpublic?open#
