CVU Celebrations
November 10, 2023
Thank you to our veterans and all who serve!
Dear CVU Community: This is a late edition Celebrations because I didn't want to write this opening until I had a chance to see Newsies. And I'm glad I waited because IT WAS AWESOME (and sold out)! Seriously. I am FIRED up by the courage, skill, dedication, and teamwork it takes to pull off a production like our students (and amazing directors) did tonight. Get to the theater and see the show!

Student Council Corner
Hi everyone, I’m Ariel! This week in Student Council, your student leaders were hard at work finalizing Gratitude Week and the Turkey Trot, student council’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Gratitude week will run next week, 11/13-11/17. During lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, a table will be set up in the cafeteria where students can respond to different prompts related to gratitude, and be entered into a raffle that will be drawn during Friday’s advisory. In Friday’s advisory, we will be creating hand turkeys, and writing the names of different people, places, activities, and anything else we are grateful for on each finger! The second annual Turkey Trot will be held on Saturday 11/18. Run, walk, or trot to show your support for CVU!
P.S. Make sure to show up to CVU Theater’s production of Newsies this Friday, Saturday, or Sunday in the CVU Auditorium to see Ariel and Mira rock it in the pit and on the stage!
Student Celebrations
From Gary Lambert: There was no CVU Show last week, but please check out this NEW video on The Arts at CVU. In this program Adam interviews the CVU Fall musical Director Elisa Van Duyne and takes a behind-the-scenes look at the production of the musical "Newsies". If you missed it during Advisory last week, here's your chance to watch!

Please show your support for all the hard work that goes into the production of "Newsies", and don't miss the show on November 10-12.

From the Direction Center: Lunch group over the past two weeks with our New American students from Burundi and Ecuador. We are so happy to have you at CVU!
From Charlie MacFadyen: If you were wondering what all those extra students were doing in the building Monday afternoon...they were our guests as we hosted the first Greater Burlington Math League meet of the 23-24 school year. Around 175 students attended. Our team is a defending co-champion from last season and spirits were high! Of the 14 schools competing, we placed a strong third in this meet (behind Essex and South Burlington). Representing CVU were:
Betty B, Niko C, Anna D, Owen D, Brady D, Eloise D, Patterson F, Cal G, Jacob G (perfect paper in Advanced Math), James H, Brendan H, Alyssa H, Anders J, Georgia K, Dan K, Kate K, Anders L, Treson M, Mitchell N, Clay N, Lily O, Maxwell R, Amber R, Wylie R (perfect paper in Advanced Math), Henry S, and Jackson Y.
Students from the Volunteer Outreach Club learned about Vermont Adaptive Sports from Felicia Fowler during this week's club meeting. There are many ways that high school students can volunteer with this exciting community resource! If you are interested in helping out with skiing, snowboarding, rock climbing, mountain biking or a variety of other indoor and outdoor activities please come to a Volunteer Outreach Club meeting during C3 on Wednesdays or contact Amy Wardwell or Will Lollis for more information.
From Lizzy Fox Lausier: Last Friday night (November 3), CVU Speech and Debate kicked off the tournament season by hosting a statewide Novice Tournament for first-time participants in both middle and high school. Sixty students gathered from around the state to try their hands at debate, impromptu and extemporaneous speaking, and poetry recitation. CVU students Meredith G, Jillian U, Jackson Y, Cassie Y, and Ace Z participated in events, and Debate Captains, Zorah N and Leonie S, acted as some of our volunteer judges.

From Brad Miller: CVU's 10th and 11th grade Harkness Building Coaches spent Thursday collaborating with their counterparts at Harwood Union High School in Duxbury, VT. All 16 10th graders participated in Harkness discussion facilitated by either CVU or Harwood 11th and 12th graders. It was truly inspirational to see such civility, curiosity, and compassion demonstrated among a group of teenagers.
Harwood's Harkness Building Coaches will be visiting CVU on 12/14!
From John Bennett: CVU's Scholars Bowl team was back in action on Friday, November 3, at a regional meet held at downtown BHS. The varsity team swept all 5 matches to run its record to a perfect 15-0 on the season. The team won matches over traditional Chittenden county rivals Burlington, South Burlington, Rice and 2 Essex teams. Varsity senior captain Elias L became only the 5th player in team history to answer more than 400 questions in his career. Our B team went 1-4, playing a tough schedule against some varsity teams and losing 2 matches by one question. The following team members played on Friday:
Elias L, Colin R, (12th grade), Dylan E, Leo , Jacob G, James H, Wylie R, Nolan S (11th grade), Leah R and Charles R (10th grade).
CVU will be back in action today when we will be traveling to a regional meet at Spaulding High.
From Katie Kuntz: SEE (Students for Election Education) organized a voter registration check event on Tuesday. Students learned how to register and vote in Vermont elections. Joan Lenes made an appearance to meet our student and help answer questions.
From Alison Duback: Hannah D, Emma H, and Cassie Y attended the DREAM Guided Mentoring retreat at Camp DREAM on Thursday. They met other High School mentors from Chittenden County and learned a lot of things that will help them be great mentors to elementary students at Hinesburg Community School later this year.
Faculty/Staff Celebrations
Jaime Fries made a shark inspired cake for her Advisory - looks delicious!
Ry Hoffman, Director of Guidance, deserves a special Celebration this week. While Ry has only been at CVU just over one year, he has forged trust with students, faculty/staff, and our larger community alike. His professionalism matches the authenticity and humanity with which he works. We appreciate you, Ry!
