March 2025
Principal's Message
Good afternoon!
Spring has finally arrived! I know that the kids are tired of inside PE and recess and have been enjoying these warmer days outside! Soon, the birds will be chirping and the spring colors will drown the winter drab. With the arrival of Spring, this means we are down to the final weeks of the school year!
We are excited to host our 2nd round of conferences for the 24-25 school year on April 3rd and 4th. Conferences will be held from 12:50-6:20 on Thursday, April 3rd, and 1-3:30 on Friday, April 4th. Sign ups will go live on Monday, March 17th at 8am at myconferencetime.com/bsms. Teachers that have specific concerns with a student's performance will be reaching out to schedule conferences during those days. If a teacher does not reach out, it means that there are no concerns with your student's performance at this time. All families are welcome to sign up regardless of whether or not they are contacted. We will be offering in person, Zoom and phone conferences in order to meet the needs of our families.
Additionally, on Thursday 4/3, we will be hosting an Open House for all families. Please see the details below for that event. We look forward to students being able to show off their school and give families a glimpse of the day-to-day routine.
Have a wonderful week, and enjoy the sunshine!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Shelley
Grade Level Updates
Linked below are the updates from all grade levels, including their Creative Arts Classes.
Spring Open House
We are super excited to welcome all BSMS families on the night of Thursday, April 3rd for an open house. Regardless if you plan to conference with a teacher or not, all families are welcome to walk through the middle school with their student. We encourage students to show their families what a day looks like for them.
In the gym, Pickleball will be set up! Students are welcome to challenge their families and teach them the fundamentals of this fun game!
Our Creative Arts area will have 4 different activity stations for families to work though. Mr. Morning will have a station where families can come and code different robots. Mr. Gosnell plans to have families build catapults using the plans designed by the 8th grade STEAM students. Mrs. Malinak is inviting you to design eagles using different drawing styles. Lastly, Mrs. Wileman is challenging families to solve a mystery by answering cooking related questions.
The music department will be open for families to come and visit. Miss Grosskopf will have GarageBand, ukuleles, and keyboards available for students to show off their music skills that they are learning in general music class and piano class. Mrs. Danielson plan to have photos and videos of the year so far on her classroom TV. If no conferences are occurring, 8th grade guitar students can come in and show their families what they have learned on their guitar.
Classroom teachers will have work posted outside of the classroom and we will have a photo booth available for families to enjoy. More information about our Open House will be shared closer to the event. Please make a note on your calendar to pop in!
PBIS Corner
Students continue to show what it means to be a Bermudian Springs student by displaying their RISE behaviors on a daily basis. We are proud to report that teachers and staff have recognized over 10,000 positive behaviors this year from our students. We celebrated this milestone as a school at the end of February with an assembly and fun-filled afternoon of a human version of the game Hungry-Hungry Hippos as well as eight lucky students getting the opportunity to "pie" a teacher. All participating students had a blast while their classmates cheered them on. It was a great way to wrap up the month and celebrate all of the great things our students have been doing this year.
We continue to reteach expectations here at BSMS and have been able to implement a Check-in, Check-out intervention for some of our students who need extra support on a daily basis. Please encourage your students to abide by school rules and expectations each and every day they enter the building. While we celebrate good behaviors, we have seen an uptick in negative behaviors specifically in the bathroom. Please help us in curbing these behaviors by reminding your student how to properly use the bathroom and keep it clean. Together, we can prevent unnecessary messes for our custodians to have to clean up. Students who receive at least one "scan" and do not have multiple office referrals will get to participate in a grade-level reward for March and we will celebrate as a school in April and May. If you wish to help us out with a PBIS event, please reach out to Mr. Jenkins at mjenkins@bermudian.org.

Nurse Notes
Springtime brings a new season of common illnesses like nasal allergies, conjunctivitis (pink eye), sinus infections, and allergic asthma. Taking the following steps can help prevent symptoms such as regularly washing bedding in hot water, vacuuming, drinking plenty of water, showering and changing clothing after playing outdoors, washing hands regularly, and keeping hands away from the face.
Reminders:
- Children should have temperatures less than 100.5F without the use of Tylenol/acetaminophen or Advil/ibuprofen for 24 hours and be free from vomiting and/or diarrhea for at least 24 hours.
- If your child has a cough and is having a hard time breathing or controlling their cough, it is recommended they remain home to rest until this is under control.
- Cough drops may only be brought to school with a note to the nurse signed by a parent or guardian.
- If your child requires medication for use at school, a parent-signed physician’s order is required. Please schedule a time with the School Nurse to deliver medications and refills.
- The state of Pennsylvania requires 6th Grade Physicals/Immunizations (Tdap and meningitis) and are due before the end of the school year, so your child does not face a possible exclusion from beginning their 7th grade year.
- The state of Pennsylvania requires 7th Grade Dental Exams. Please return these forms promptly. https://www.bermudian.org/services/health-services/health-forms
Dates to Remember:
- 7th grade scoliosis screenings will begin the week of March 3, 2025.
- The Mobile Dentist is coming on April 15, 2025.
- District physician is coming for 6th grade physicals for those with prior parent permission on April 3, 2025.
- District dentist is coming for 7th graders for those with prior parent permission on May 2, 2025.
- 6th grade physicals and immunizations are due before end of school year.
- 7th grade dental forms are due before end of school year.
- Vision screenings have been completed and referrals mailed. The referral form needs completed by an eye doctor and returned to school nurse. Poor vision is a main cause for headaches and can also affect academics. Please reach out to the school nurse if you need financial assistance with getting an exam by an eye doctor and/or eyeglasses.

OFFICE REMINDERS
Attendance and Family Trip Procedures
Absences
Regular attendance at school is essential to maintain a good academic standing. Excused absences include: illness, family emergencies, prearranged doctor and dental appointments, and pre approved trips and school activities. Other absences are unexcused unless prior approval is given through the main office. Prior approval should be requested by the parent or guardian in writing prior to the day of absence. After three unexcused absences, a notice of Illegal Absences will be issued. After a 1st Notice of Illegal Absences has been issued, a parent meeting will be scheduled in a attempt to support the family and student with attendance. Future illegal absences may result in the school presenting the attendance issue before the local magistrate. This can be monitored in your Sapphire Parent Portal.
Tardies
This year we will again closely monitoring student tardiness. For each accumulation of 65 unexcused minutes, the student will receive what will equal to a 1/2 day unexcused absence.
Excuses
Please provide the school with written documentation for all tardies and absences. Absences will be marked as unexcused until an excuse is provided. Upon returning to school after an absence, students must report to the office with written documentation signed by their parent/guardian. All written excuses must be provided with five school days of the absence.
There are numerous options for providing an excuse/note for your students' absence(s). Any of the following are acceptable methods to submit this documentation. As always, if possible please provide medical documentation.
Complete the electronic form at this link English or Spanish
Email a note/excuse to Mrs. Clouser at kclouser@bermudian.org at the middle school.
Send in a written note/excuse directly to the office with the student.
Excused Family Trips
A total accumulation of 10 excused family trip days for the school year is the limit allowed per student. Any additional days will not be approved. Please provide a weeks notice prior to the trip.
This form is available to request permission for your child's absence from school to participate in an educational trip. All trips must have prior approval. Please fill this form out and submit to your child's building secretary/principal for approval.

Parent Pick Up/ Drop Off Procedures
Dismissal Expectations
Parent Drop Off
Parents should use the 2nd loop that circles the parking lot when dropping off students. Please pull all the way up to the end of the walkway to provide enough room for all cars dropping off. The school doors open at 7:25am for student entry. Students are expected to be in their homerooms by 7:40 each day. When exciting the parking lot in the morning, a reminder that all traffic must turn right at the top of the middle school drive in order to maintain traffic flow during high school arrival.
Parent Pick Up
Parents that wish to pick up their students should park along the parent pick up loop, with the first car pulling forward to the end of the walkway. In addition, please do not block the entrance to the bus loop so that busses can pull forward into the loop. Students being picked up will be dismissed at 2:38pm daily.
A reminder that all students are expected to leave the building by the 2:45pm dismissal. The only exception to this is for students who are under the direct supervision of district staff, such as coaches and tutors. Students are not permitted to stay on campus after dismissal without the permission of an administrator. Students that wish to attend after school events are expected leave campus at dismissal and then return at the start of the event.
