Dr. Pepukayi's Update
FULL TEXT OF DR. PEPUKAYI'S SEPTEMBER 19 UPDATE
Hello TCPS Families!
I am recording this week’s update at the Academy Art Museum, where the Mid-Shore Constitution Alliance hosted their annual celebration of Constitution Day on Tuesday, September 17th.
Renowned actors Darius Wallace and Kurt Smith performed a historic conversation between Frederick Douglas and Thomas Jefferson, and other historic events were reenacted to honor the day.
Last night the Board of Education held their regular meeting. The board recognized Ms. Kelly Coutts for receiving a Fullbright award, and Mr. Jeremy Hillyard, our Maryland Teacher of the Year Finalist! Student Board members Brynn Lizewski and Gabriella Streaker were sworn in for the 2024-2025 school year.
Mr. Kevin Shafer, Director of Operations, presented the FY 26 Capital Improvement Plan, the FY 25 Comprehensive Maintenance Plan, and an Easton Middle School Tree Planting Project! The full meeting recording posted on our website and linked in this update.
I want to sincerely thank our students, staff, community, and law enforcement partners for their support this week. Here in Talbot County, we can and will Transform and Perform TOGETHER!
Have a great weekend and remember, it’s always a great day for success at TCPS.

Despite political and social polarization, folks still come together on issues that unite us. What could be more binding than literacy? Differences on education methods exist, but not on the importance of ensuring everyone learns to read. In a recent event at the Library of Congress, David Banks, the Chancellor of NYC Public Schools, suggested, 'we all need to work together to deal with this crisis’. Setting the example, in just the two years since assuming the helm as Chancellor, he has implemented NYC Reads, a standard curriculum of teaching kids to read across the entire NYC school system.
On short notice, but with the fortunate backing of J2W Foundation in support of the Campaign for Grade Level Reading, a national organization with over 350 communities networked that are laser focused on the predictive indicator of 3rd grade reading, the film will be screened here on Sunday, September 29th, at North Dorchester High School. Following the film, a panel of local leaders and educators will discuss the pathways to improving outcomes and achieving grade level literacy by the third grade.
Al Sikes, one of the founders of READ Alliance, will moderate the discussion.
Panelists:
Cristy Morrell Executive Director Critchlow Adkins
Sharon Pepukayi Superintendent Talbot County Public Schools
James Redman Principal Polaris Village Academy
Jymil Thompson Superintendent Dorchester County Public Schools
John Wyatt Founder J2W Foundation
Congratulations to Diana Contento, Easton Elementary School Pre-k Instructional Assistant, our Applebee's Support Staff Award winner!
WHAT IS TALBOT GOES PURPLE?
Talbot Goes Purple is a substance abuse awareness program that engages our community and youth to stand against substance abuse. TGP is a prevention initiative, and focuses on evidence-based programs and activities with local youth.
The project is based upon THP Project Purple, an initiative of The Herren Project, a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation established by former NBA basketball player, Chris Herren, that assists individuals and families struggling with addiction. To learn more about the Talbot Goes Purple initiative, click on the image or follow "Talbot Goes Purple" on Facebook.
More than 90% of people with substance use disorder started drinking or using other drugs before the age of 18.
Fentanyl is involved in about 80% of all overdoses.
Accidental poisoning (overdoes) is the leading cause of death among adults ages 20-54
REQUESTING TRANSPORTATION
Prior to the start of each school year, TCPS is requiring parents to opt in for student transportation to and from school. This information will result in more efficient transportation operation by providing the Office of Student Transportation accurate ridership data. Families will be emailed a link to a Transportation Request form in the month of July to request or decline transportation. Families that do not complete the form for each child will be opted out of transportation services for the school year.
Please note, parents with a student who has transportation provided as part of an IEP will not be affected as eligibility for special needs transportation is determined as part of a separate IEP process.
Students must attend their home school based on their residence in order to receive bus service.
Students attending a school other than their home school are not eligible.
Families can opt back in for transportation at any time, as long as the student qualifies for busing services. The TCPS Student Transportation Request form can be found on our website.
