BLACK JOY IS BLACK HISTORY - BESSIE COLEMAN AND BESSIE STRINGFIELD
Team Discovery studied the major events that shaped the black experience in America. That encompassed learning about the institution of slavery, Jim Crow Laws, and the Civil Rights Movement. With a clear view of the challenges faced by black Americans as context our students learned about two historical figures that are not as well known as they should be.
Bessie Coleman and Bessie Stringfield were two ordinary people that did extraordinary things. They did this despite facing barriers like Jim Crow Laws, and stereotypes about their identity as black women. Laws that stacked the deck against them and misinformed stereotypes did keep them from reaching their dreams. Bessie Stringfeild traversed her bike through all of the lower 48 states and crossed the country 8 times during the time of Jim Crow Laws. Bessie Coleman became the first African American woman to earn her pilot’s license. They both used their passion to make a living with Coleman barnstorming and Stringfield the star of her own motorcycle show. They are examples of how to respond to adversity and that you should do what brings you joy. Black joy and excellence was the focus of the unit and the students made collages as one way to demonstrate their knowledge.
