Save the Date for the Health Equity Work Group (HEWG) 2021 Health Disparities Roundtable! This year's theme will focus on justice, policy and ethics surrounding the vaccination of the US population against COVID-19. More information to come. This event is co-sponsored by the Center for MCH.

Assistant Professor Dr. Rachel Hardemann was recently featured in a KARE 11 investigative piece about the racial disparities in COVID outcomes for Minnesotans. “Overall, we appear to be this incredibly healthy and thriving state...But when you start to peel back the layers and look at things by race, we see that that is not actually the reality for people of color in our state,” said Hardeman.

Assistant Professor Dr. Jaime Slaughter-Acey conducted the first study in the US to understand how skin tone bias relates to Black birthing outcomes. “For instance, someone who is light brown could be favored among some people because of their more European appearance. Skin tone may influence Black Americans vulnerability and exposure to racism-related stress and marginalization,” says Slaughter-Acey.

Negotiation is a cooperative process where participants try to find a solution that meets the interests of all involved parties. Conflict resolution is resolving or managing a dispute by sharing each party's points of view and addressing their interests to produce a satisfying outcome. Leadership in public health requires knowledge and skills in negotiation and conflict resolution to address differences among stakeholders, health care providers, communities, managers, providers and families.

The UMN Healthy Youth Development Prevention Research Center (UMN PRC) collaborates with state and local organizations to conduct research, disseminate findings and provide training on best practices in promoting health equity and healthy youth development. The intern will collect and manage state-wide data on sexual health, revise fact sheets and materials to include current sexual health statistics and assist with evaluation and assessment activities. This position is a part time, 10 hour a week commitment. Please submit your cover letter and resume to MCH Program alumna Jill Farris at farrisj@umn.edu. Assistant Professor Dr. Rebecca Shlafer will present her exploration of the developmental consequences of parental incarceration for infants and young children and consider how the incarceration of a parent – and co-occurring Adverse Childhood Experiences – can compromise healthy social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. The workshop will also address ways to support relationships between incarcerated parents and their infants and young children. This webinar is hosted by the MN Association for Children’s Mental Health.

This year during Black History Month, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) is partnering with fellow Offices of Minority Health at HHS and healthcare professionals around the nation to focus on highlighting the impacts COVID-19 has on African Americans with underlining health issues such as uncontrolled hypertension. February is American Heart Month! This month is dedicated to motivating Americans to adopt healthy lifestyles to prevent heart disease. Focusing on heart health has never been more important. People with poor cardiovascular health are also at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

The aims of the Center include providing continuing professional education in maternal and child health (MCH) and support for students in online and in-person MCH graduate programs at the University of Minnesota. Center and MCH Program faculty are involved in research and training in infant and child health, adolescent health, family health, health disparities, reproductive health, and women's health.
