Brief Message From the Office Staff
Did you know that Orange Shirt Day (September 30th) is a day when we honour the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada. It's also a day to learn more about the history of those schools. The “orange shirt” in Orange Shirt Day refers to the new shirt that Phyllis Webstad was given to her by her grandmother for her first day of school that was taken and was never returned.

🏃 TERRY FOX RUN 2024 #NOMATTERWHAT 👟
Terry Fox Run - Sept. 27th
This year’s campaign, called #NoMatterWhat celebrates Terry’s determination and persistence. When running his Marathon of Hope in 1980 he faced many challenges along the way, but he kept going – no matter the obstacles, no matter the journey, no matter the odds - NO MATTER WHAT. We know that schools coast to coast to coast will carry on his legacy to raise funds for cancer research and display their amazing “NoMatterWhat” efforts for this year’s Run.

🌟 Community Engagement
🧦 SAINTS Spirit Day - Crazy Sock Day - Oct. 2nd 🧦
Author Christy Jordan-Fenton at St. Martin's Oct 8th
We are so excited to let everyone know that co-author of Fatty Legs, Christy Jordan-Fenton will be visiting our students on Tuesday, October 8th. Jordan-Fenton co-wrote the best-selling memoir Fatty Legs with her mother-in-law, Margaret Pokiak-Fenton (Olemaun). Fatty Legs is the story of Margaret Pokiak-Fenton who as a young Inuit girl, was eager to attend an “outsiders’ school” to learn how to read. However, she had to leave her family and community behind in order to attend this residential school, where she overcame much cruel treatment from both students and adults. We are very fortunate to have Christy Jordan-Fenton attend our school to share her family's story.

🏫 Learners and Learning
Learning Through Teamwork at St. Martin’s Catholic School
At St. Martin’s Catholic School, teamwork plays a central role in both academic and physical education. The benefits of collaborative learning are evident in classrooms and on the playground, fostering not only academic growth but also essential social skills.
In Mrs. Sorochan’s Grade 3 class, students are exploring the concept of time and learning how to read clocks through engaging group work centres. These interactive stations encourage students to work together, helping each other understand the nuances of telling time. Whether they're matching clock faces to times or solving time-based puzzles, the students learn through cooperation, sharpening both their math skills and their ability to collaborate.
Meanwhile, in Mrs. C’s energetic gym class, teamwork takes on a physical form. One of her students’ favorite activities involves keeping a balloon in the air as long as possible—while working together as a team. This fun exercise builds coordination, teamwork, and communication, as students figure out how to keep the balloon from touching the ground by relying on each other’s efforts.
At St. Martin’s, learning through teamwork isn’t just about academics or athletics. It’s about building a community where students understand the power of working together toward common goals.
