PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
There is a new Tik Tok Challenge making the rounds that we wanted to make sure families are aware of. The Tik Tok "Backpack Dreads" Challenge seems to have made it's way to Pershing. We noticed a little activity around this at the beginning of the week but the challenge seemed to expand significantly on Friday with a large number of students asking other students for the zipper strings/tags on their backpacks or even in some instances simply taking them without permission from students' backpacks. I have included a picture of what a backpack participating in the challenge looks like.
We will begin making announcements as part of our morning announcements on Monday that students may not engage in the "Backpack Dreads" Challenge during school hours and we ask that parents speak with their children about this challenge and remind them that their primary responsiblity at school is learning and that challenges like this can distract from the learning environment and if they are taking a zipper tag from someone else's backpack without permission that is tantamount to stealing. We also ask that you check their child(ren)'s backpack(s) and remove "the dreads" if your child(ren) have been collecting them. Students that continue to engage in the "backpack dreads" challenge will face disciplinary action. Thank you in advance for your support on this.
I also wanted to share that although we did see significant improvement on the ebike situation for a few weeks were are beginning to hear reports from the community again that some students continue to ride their ebikes in an unsafe manner. Storing ebikes on the Pershing campus is a privilege and if we identify Pershing students who are not utilizing their ebikes in a safe manner they will no longer be allowed to store their bikes on campus during the school day. The last time I sent out information to the community and asked parents to talk with their child(ren) about eBike safety it was incredibly helpful. I am asking for your assistance once again in reminding students that although convenient, if not used in the right way, eBikes can be dangerous and we want students to operate these devices in as safe a manner a possible and ensure they are abiding by all traffic laws and utilizing all required safety equipment including helmets.
And last but not least I would like to end on a positive note. The P1 grading window closed last week and I am proud to report just over 500 students have earned Honor Roll or Principal's Honor Roll status. That is an incredible accomplishment and well above the typical number we see. Our 7th grade class had the highest number of students earning this status. We know that student success in school does not happen without strong family support so thank you Pershing families for all the work you do getting your child(ren) to school everyday, helping with homework, and all the other things you do day in and day out to help your child(ren)'s be academically successful!
Sincerely,
Melanie Kray
