New Field ES Weekly Updates
Week 29: April 2-5, 2024
Welcome Back from Spring Break!
New Field families,
Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope you had a fun-filled week away from school. As we return today to the fourth quarter it is hard to believe that we have a short nine and one half weeks left in the school year. It is at this time of year that we begin looking ahead to end-of-year celebrations, summer programming and planning for school year 2024-2025
Next week on Wednesday, April 10 we have Third Quarter Report Card Conferences between 11:00 - 3:00 and 4:00 - 6:00 PM. All classroom teachers have emailed and shared scheduling documents with families. Please be sure to check your email and sign up for your conference. Conferences can be held virtually, via phone or in person. Wednesday, April 10 is also our citywide election day for Local School Council! Be sure to vote on Wednesday, our LSC is charged with important responsibilities such as principal selection and evaluation, approving our school budget and approving our school improvement plan.
Looking ahead to SY2025, we are thrilled to share that Kinder-Fourth Grade enrollment is now open! Neighborhood families can enroll any day between 9:00 - 2:00, no appointment needed.
- Click here to check your address and your assigned neighborhood school
- Click here to view our required documents for enrollment
Preschool Applications for SY2025 open on Tuesday, April 9 at 9:00 AM. All preschool enrollment is centrally assigned by the Office of Early Childhood. This is a different process than K-12. Be sure to submit your application - click here for more information.
Beginning next week, (Week 30), we will begin collecting family confirmation for next school of enrollment.
- PK & Fourth Grade Families: Please be sure to confirm your child's next school of enrollment ASAP. We will update our records accordingly
- Grades K-3 families: Please confirm that you will continue enrollment with us. Changing schools? This requires a transfer at the end of the year. Please help us plan effectively for SY2025 and confirm your child's enrollment.
Be on the lookout for enrollment surveys next week! Be sure to inform us of any changes in enrollment by Monday, June 3.
Looking forward to a great last nine weeks of our school year!
Warmly,
Mrs. Conrey Callahan

Solar Eclipse Experiential Learning Opportunity
On Monday, April 8th, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross over the United States. At 2:07 pm, Chicago will be at the maximum point within the eclipse zone with 94% of the sun covered by the moon.
New Field is planning an opportunity to allow students to observe the solar eclipse outside. Students in PK and Grades 1-4 will participate in this learning opportunity. Observing the eclipse provides opportunities to see science in action and connect future generations of explorers to the awe and wonder of Earth and Space Sciences.
As always, student safety is a top priority. Students will be provided International Organization for Standardization (ISO) approved eclipse glasses to observe the solar eclipse. All students that participate in observing the solar eclipse outside are required to wear the ISO approved eclipse glasses and to have signed parent/guardian consent for participation.
Please be sure to return your child's signed consent form by Friday, April 5. Consent forms were sent home Tuesday, April 2 and are also available below.
Interested in Chaperoning a Field Trip? Sign up to be a Level II Volunteer
Field trips are a wonderful opportunity for experiential learning, to broaden our perspective and worldview and to have fun together exploring our incredible city.
Field trips are made possible by YOU when you serve as a chaperone in your child's classroom.
In order to chaperone, CPS requires that parents go through the application process to become an approved Level 2 Volunteer. See below for the required steps to becoming an approved parent volunteer.
Step 1: Fill out the online application form: (Scroll down and click on "View Application")
School Organization: New Field School
Volunteer Type: Level II
Coaching: No
Type of volunteer: Parent/Guardian Volunteer
Step 2: Bring a photo ID (driver's license, passport, library card, etc) to Ms. Briggs in the main office and let her know that you are applying to be a Level 2 volunteer. Please be sure to share your child's name and classroom number. You can also email this to Ms. Briggs at: sschmauderer-bri@cps.edu
The ID may be from another country, as long as it has a photo and name. Sue will photocopy it and submit it. Approval typically takes a 3-5 business days.
We hope you can join us on an upcoming field trip or another school-based event.
Outside Food & Snacks at Lunch
New Field follows the CPS Healthy Schools Policy and we teach nutrition and healthy habits as part of our holistic approach to education. Families, we need your help! Please only send healthy snacks and food for lunches. Unfortunately we have seen a large increase in sugary drinks and snacks. Please help us maintain a healthy school environment and refrain from sending children to school with sugary, processed foods and drinks. Please consult with your classroom teacher if you have any questions.
Click below to access our healthy snacks list. Please be aware that this is also the approved snack list for all birthday parties and classroom celebrations.
