Welcome to the 2024-2025 School Year!

I have missed you all over the break and cannot wait to see you and many of our new friends next week!

I hope you had a wonderful summer and are ready to get back into the swing of things. Your teachers have been already working so hard to prepare and plan for another exciting and fabulous year here at Edison.

Ms. Becky and Ms. Dina are now back working in the front office and are here to answer any questions you may have. Our front office hours are 7:30 am - 3:00 pm Monday - Friday, until we start back to school. Please stop by or give them a call if you need anything!

There is a lot of information in this newsletter so please read carefully!

We are excited to have had our front parking lot repaved, and the back playground and basketball court redone!

We are excited to welcome back many of of staff and have added many new great teachers!

Very exciting news in our Specials department! Every student will experience 30 minutes of dance each week with Mrs. Elliott (also our new GT teacher), we have a new Music teacher, Ms. Mayes, and Mrs. Rhonda Conn-Parent will be heading up our Art classes.

One of great additions is that we now have a Community Liaison, Mr. Scott Clapper. Mr. Clapper will be working with Edison and Penrose Elementary in helping all of our community. Look for information coming from him soon.

Also new to Edison: Mr. Hall (4th grade), Mrs. Troutman (3rd grade), Ms. Evans in our new AN SPED program, Ms. McKinney in PK -not to worry, Mrs. Henderson has moved to kindergarten! We are looking forward to welcoming all our other new staff to our great Edison Community.

Look for information to continue to come home on D11's new Attendance, Discipline, and Cell phone policies. What we at Edison need to focus on is Attendance. It is so important that our students are at school and on time every day. As to cell phones in the elementary setting, we do not encourage phones at school, however if a student has one, it must stay in their backpack at all times. Again, the first week of school, look for more detailed information to come home.

When and how will I know who my student has for a teacher?

• Class lists (1-5) will be posted on the front doors at 2:00 pm on Friday, August 9th.
• We will then let students and families in to visit classrooms and meet their teacher.
• We will also have a sweet treat for all!
• After Friday, teachers will reach out with DOJO invites to get all students signed up!

****EXCEPTION: All Kindergarteners will be coming in on Monday to meet both teachers, get a feel for the building and classroom and get screened. Our teachers will work on Tuesday putting balanced classes together and families will get a phone call Tuesday afternoon letting know who your student has as a teacher. Kindergarten students are absolutely welcome to come on Friday the 9th to meet everyone and visit the classrooms.

What supplies will my student need?

• School District 11 and Edison provide all supplies for students.
• We have compiled a short list of additional items that, if possible, we would like students to bring.
• See "SUPPLY LIST" in the next section.
• If you are facing difficulties in getting any of those items, please reach out to the front office and we will get them for your student.

What time does school start and end?

• Our first bell rings at 7:40 am for breakfast in the classroom.
• Grades 3-5 will enter through the North end doors and proceed to their rooms.
• Grades PK-2 will enter through their outside classroom doors.
• Our school day begins PROMPTLY at 7:50 am. After this bell, students must be signed in at the front office.
• Students will be released for the day at 2:50 pm through the same doors as the morning access.
• Please note: students must leave school grounds immediately after school. The campus is closed until 5:00 pm (unless students are in after school activities).

Do I have to pay for breakfast or lunch?

• Breakfast and lunch are provided free for all our students.
• Breakfast is served in the classroom every day beginning at 7:40 -7:50 am. If a student arrives after 7:50 am (which means they are late to school) they will not be served breakfast.
• Students may bring a snack to have at a scheduled break time during the day, but it must remain in their backpack until that time. Students will not be allowed to bring extra items to lunch if they are eating school lunch (for example: bags of Taki's to share with their friends).
• Students are more than welcome to bring a lunch from home.

When will clubs begin and how do I sign my student up?

• After school clubs will begin shortly after the beginning of school, look for information to come home and sign ups will happen on our website.

What Specials do we have this year?

• We will be offering PE, Music, Art and now Dance for all of our students!

Do I really have to sign the planner every day?

• All students K-5 will receive a planner to use every day. Goal setting, homework, and important dates will be entered every day.
• Planners are a great way to communicate with your child's teacher.
• We use these planners to keep guardians updated on all things Edison!
• As partners in your child's education, we highly encourage you to review them every day with your student, sign that you saw it, and use it to facilitate communication about their day.

What are the best ways to communicate with my child's teacher?

• As stated above, planners are a great way to communicate!
• Each class will be set up with a DOJO account. This is our preferred use of communication. You will have access to updates and information from the school, departments and teachers.
• We do ask that you if you have concerns, please come in and communicate in person with your child's teacher instead of via DOJO.
• Parents/Guardians will occasionally receive emails via the D11 Loop.
• Feel free to email, call or come visit at any time!

Where do I drop off and pick up my student?

FRONT PARKING ALONG HANCOCK

• Please refrain from stopping your car and having students jump in or out as soon as you enter. This causes a backup and it is unsafe for students to be running through the parking lot.
• Please refrain from parking in the handicap spaces unless you have a handicap sticker/plate. We have many families that need and use these spots.
• Follow the flow of traffic to the drive through to the Kiss and Go drop off by the North entrance of the building.
• Enter and Exit from the appropriate spaces.
• Please do not leave any car running, unattended.

SOUTH - Primrose Drive

We are aware that many of you park along both sides of the street. Thank you for not parking in the bus lanes. Much appreciated!

However, if you choose to park on the South side of the street, we are PLEASE asking you to walk to the top of the street and cross at the corner of N Hancock and Primrose. Many of our families are walking directly across the street, in between the buses and parked cars. Cars that are traveling the street are having to stop and many times cannot see you or the children as you step out into the street.

While we appreciate that you all are mindful with your child while you are crossing, there will be times when your student will need to cross a street when you are not there. Please teach them and practice with them the safest way to cross.

• Students will be released for the day at 2:50 pm through the same doors as the morning access.
