Construction Career Days
MHS students in the 11th and 12th grade were invited to the Southern Colorado annual event on April 18th. The purpose of Construction Career Days is to broaden student knowledge about the multi-faceted opportunities available and to increase the number of men and women entering the construction industry.
Students spend the day, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. engaging in hands-on events, stationary equipment activities, and technology demonstrations. Lunch will be provided.
The Southern Colorado Construction Career Day Foundation plans this day to introduce the Construction Industry to our next generation. This will give these students a great insight to the job opportunities offered in the Construction industry. Please help us help them!!!!!!!
American Dreams Academy Celebration-City Council Proclamation
Colorado Springs City Council recognized Mitchell High School for establishing and offering the American Dreams Academy program funded through the Milken Foundation for Advancing the American Dream. City Councilwoman Nancy Henjum wrote the proclamation and presented it to the staff on April 24th. A special thanks to community member Delia Armstrong-Busby for her work in bringing the program to Mitchell High School, City Councilwoman Henjum and President Tom Strand, alumni Tristan Gearhart (CFO of Colorado Springs Utilities), and area superintendent Sherry Kalbach for their support of the program. Also, great appreciation to the Mitchell High School staff, especially instructor Yantz Robinson and the 17 senior students that are participating and earning certificates through Coursera. Student Life
Extracurricular activities provide a channel for reinforcing the lessons learned in the classroom, offering students the opportunity to apply academic skills in a real-world context, and are thus considered part of a well-rounded education. Recent research suggests that participation in extracurricular activities may increase students' sense of engagement or attachment to their school, and thereby decrease the likelihood of school failure and dropping out. All January student involvement will be celebrated in this issue.
Jazz Festival
On April 6th and 7th, Mitchell High School hosted the Pikes Peak Jazz Festival. This two-day event brought some of the best middle and high school jazz bands from the region to our campus. Each night was capped off with a performance from a local professional big band. The Peak Big Band and Academy Jazz Ensemble performed on Thursday and Friday, respectively. We had judges and clinicians come work with the bands to hone their skills and get better as jazz musicians. The judges and clinicians are UNC professors, retired Falconaires musicians, and current teachers at well-established music schools. Everyone had a great time, and the festival ran smoothly thanks to the help of our band student workers. We are excited to bring this event back next year and hope you can join us for a performance or two. The festival and evening performances were all free and open to the public.
