Notes from Principal Chapman
Dear LHS Students, Families and Staff,
Happy New Year from LHS! We are excited to celebrate our 2025 Cards this year as well as continue to watch our underclassmen grow. So far 84% of LHS Seniors have applied to at least one college. Early college acceptances and post LHS plans have been impressive. Our seniors are sharing their news on Instagram @lhs2025decisions if you’d like to follow along. The first 20 students posted decisions to attend Tulane, UO, UCLA, Culinary Institute of America, Clark College, Villanova, American University, Princeton, Cornell, Middlebury, University of Richmond, Montana State University, Stanford, Pitzer, Santa Clara, Carleton, and Gonzaga. Students needing help pursuing apprenticeships, career or post-secondary opportunities can get support at Lincoln’s College & Career Office on the first floor near the Main Office.
Congratulations to Lincoln’s Constitution Team who wowed judges with their knowledge of the founding fathers, constitutional amendments, case law, analysis of current constitutional issues ranging from fair trials and social media to the debate regarding states v federal rights. Our Constitutional scholars earned one of just six slots to advance to the State competition in two weeks where they will compete for the opportunity to represent Oregon at Nationals. Lincoln’s team members are mostly sophomores making our team the youngest team in the country. Lincoln also maintains the record of being the school with the most National Championship titles in the country. We are proud of this year’s students and their sustained work and dedication. Our success is also due to the incredible coaching by all volunteer lawyers and Constitution Team alumni who return to give back to the program. Our country needs more highly informed civics scholars! Go Cards!
We were excited to share that our Romance Book Club students were featured on NPR’s All Things Considered as part of a celebration of reading as part of Lincoln’s Romance Book Club. It’s a 5 minute listen and we highly recommend listening as the joy of reading and discussing literature will make you smile. Literacy is important for many reasons at LHS and we loved the positive national shoutout!
LHS After Hours FREE Tutoring is available for students who need added help before final exams this month. What will After Hours look like?
It will be hosted in room 229 on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:45-4:45
Snacks will be provided
There will be tables with signs for each subject a student is there to work on
We can use the flex space on the landing and my office to spread out and work with students there.
We will have a QR for students to scan after they have made progress on their work to track their attendance so we can see who is using the support, how often, and then can hopefully give them a reward for coming.
If you’d like to help chaperone “After Hours” supports or provide tutoring please contact Instructional Specialist Emily Hensley @ehensley@pps.net
It’s the time of the year when students, families and staff can nominate a teacher for Oregon’s Teacher of the Year award. Find out more here. LHS has outstanding educators!
Please join us tomorrow night, Tuesday the 14th, here in our gym for the Cardinals v Jefferson Demos doubleheader basketball games with Girls at 5:45 and Boys at 7:15. This is a great way to connect with alumni, other students and families and build community at LHS! Just come!
Go Cards!

Community Ask for 9th Grade Support on March 5th.
On March 5th, 10th graders will be taking the Pre ACT, 11th graders will be taking the SAT and 12th graders will have graduation requirement offerings at Lincoln High. We are in the process of creating an opportunity for our 9th graders to visit career technical programs and/or different workplaces in the Portland Metro area. If you (or your workplace) would be interested in hosting a group of around 20 students for an hour-and-a-half please email Travis Johnson at tjohnson1@pps.net. Our hope is to offer students a menu of opportunities allowing them to choose a field they are interested in learning more about.

Reminder: “85 to Jive” Attendance Policy
As a reminder, Lincoln High School’s “85 to Jive” policy requires students to maintain at least 85% attendance to be eligible to attend the upcoming Winter Formal and Prom. This includes all absences, excused or unexcused. Additionally, students must clear any outstanding Absence Labs or Tardy Labs before the event.
Students can check their attendance percentage and access instructions by visiting tinyurl.com/85ToJive. For students below 85%, there is an option to create a modified attendance plan by meeting with Ms. Koch, our Attendance Coach. Congresswoman Bonamici is inviting students to participate in the 2025 Congressional Art Competition. Each year, the Congressional Institute sponsors a visual arts competition for high school students. Each participating congressional district selects the winning artwork, and that piece is displayed in the U.S Capitol for a year. The deadline is typically at the end of April. This competition is open to all high school students who are residents of the First Congressional District of Oregon, which includes all of Tillamook, Clatsop, and Columbia Counties and parts of Multnomah and Washington Counties. Please use this tool if you or a student is unsure of your district: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/members/OR/1 Students who are interested in participating in the competition should review the previous year's guidelines attached to this email. Artwork may not be larger than 26”x26”x4” when a frame is added, and must be the original work of a single high school student. Each student may submit only one piece to the competition. All entries for this competition must be received in the Beaverton District Office at the end of April. Exact date and time will be provided in the spring. Art may be mailed or dropped off in-person by calling 503-469-6010 to arrange a time.
