Mankato West Students Sing On Stage with the Band Foreigner
Congratulations to the Mankato West choir for winning a local competition where choirs submitted videos of their students singing Foreigner’s iconic power ballad, I Want to Know What Love Is. Videos were posted on the band’s website, and visitors cast their votes online. After all the votes were tallied, Mankato West came out on top!
As a result, the choir earned the incredible experience of performing I Want to Know What Love Is live on stage with Foreigner at the Mayo Clinic Health System Center on September 28th. In addition, they received a $500 donation to the school’s scholarship fund.
School Choice Update
Bridges Community School, Jefferson Elementary, and Rosa Parks Elementary Innovation Teams have met twice this year to provide input on the choice school models. They have reviewed both family and staff survey results and begun exploring various school model options.
During these meetings the teams reviewed:
- survey results and identified key priorities for the school model choices
- different choice school models, discussing the benefits and drawbacks of each as they relate specifically to each site.
All site innovation teams will be meeting next week to look at district wide survey results and continue to provide input into next steps in narrowing our choice school model options.

- Getting familiar with the tools they’ll use to build raised garden beds for the Lincoln Community Center.
- Learning how to make and jar homemade salsa.
- Exploring Seven Mile Creek to prepare for their upcoming “Preschoolers in the Wild” course, where they’ll develop nature-based stations to present to preschoolers later this year.

German American Partnership Program
This program provides an invaluable opportunity for our students to experience German culture and language firsthand. This past June, six students from West High School traveled to Germany, and now we are excited to host 16 German students from KGS School in Germany at West High School for the next three weeks. These students will be living with American families and attending classes at West High School to immerse themselves in American high school life.
We host this program every other year, and students enrolled in German levels 3 and 4 are eligible to participate in the travel portion.
