Explorer Briefing
October 9, 2024
Counselor's Corner
Hello Families,
It's hard to believe we are already into October. We are continuing to learn about and practice 'flexible thinking' here at school, using the problem solving wheel. Our students have been working very hard at problem solving for themselves using 'Explorer Tools' (our problem solving wheel). Ask your child(ren) which strategies they have tried out at school!
As we move into the colder months and holiday season I just want to remind you that we have resources available to help out with groceries, jackets, or connection to community supports, should you find your family needing a little extra help. I will be periodically posting about specific programs but also please feel free to reach out through parent square if there is a need that I may be able to help with.
Have a wonderful rest of the week,
Mrs. C
Important Reminders
- NO SCHOOL this Friday due to a teacher professional development day
- Parent Teacher Conference sign ups are open. Make sure to check your Parent Square messages from your teacher.
- During conference week, sack lunches will be available to take home for those students who wish to purchase them before dismissal at 12:35 pm.
High Cap
A note from the Highly Capable Program teacher, Mrs. Hannah Engstrom
Each year we screen all second grade students for eligibility in the district’s Highly Capable Program. This year’s screening occurred with the iReady Fall diagnostic tests. Students whose scores meet at least one qualifying point for the program will be invited for further testing via a Parent Square message to their family which includes a “Request for Permission to Test.” Further testing will occur during conference week, October 21-25. If you are the parent/guardian of a second grade student and do not receive this Parent Square message, you are welcome to apply for the Highly Capable Program in the Spring. If you have any questions about the program feel free to contact me via Parent Square or email at hengstrom@steilacoom.k12.wa.us.

Join Us for Unity Day!
We are excited to announce that our school will be celebrating Unity Day on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, a national event dedicated to promoting kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Unity Day is part of National Bullying Prevention Month, and it’s a special day where students, staff, and families come together to stand against bullying. We invite everyone to wear orange as a visible show of support for a world without bullying.
On Unity Day, we’ll be engaging in activities that promote unity, encourage discussions about how we can foster a more inclusive and kind environment, and build a stronger sense of community. It’s a great opportunity to remind our students that they are not alone and that we all play a role in making our school a safe and supportive place for everyone.
We encourage you to talk to your children about the importance of kindness, and feel free to join us by wearing orange as well. Together, we can unite for a better, more inclusive future!
Great ShakeOut - October 17
Great Washington ShakeOut Drill – October 17 at 10:17 AM
Our school will be participating in the Great Washington ShakeOut on October 17th at 10:17 AM, an important statewide earthquake drill. The purpose of this drill is to help students, staff, and families practice how to stay safe during an earthquake. Washington is earthquake-prone, so it's critical to be prepared and know what to do.
During the drill, everyone will practice "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" — the recommended action during an earthquake. Families are encouraged to use this time to talk with their children about earthquake safety at home. Consider reviewing your home emergency plan, identifying safe spots in each room, and checking emergency supplies like water, food, and medications.
For coastal areas, tsunami warning sirens will sound as part of this drill. Please remember, this is only a test. The sirens will use the actual wailing sound, not the typical chimes.
Preparedness starts with practice! Learn more at https://www.shakeout.org/washington/.
