Message from Principal Terri Jackson
Greetings, Woodland Families
It’s hard to believe we are nearly two-thirds of the way through our school year. February was a busy and exciting month for students and families.
Thank you, families, for attending parent teacher conferences. I cannot emphasize the importance of our partnership and collaboration. Together, we can work together to ensure the growth and success of your child. A big shout out to our wonderful PTO for bringing forth delicious dinners for our teachers during all three conference nights and for providing Compassion Coffee Cart on the last morning of conferences. The extra caffeine was much needed and appreciated by all our staff.
In February, we also celebrated Black History month. We were grateful for all the special guest speakers that came to Woodland to share their time, journeys, talents, and stories. It was wonderful to have our scholars see the beautiful contributions of our everyday heroes right here in our community.
February was also I love to Read Month, our school community enjoyed a variety of extra fun reading events throughout the month.
Please look for information from your child’s teacher regarding the PTO sponsored Read-A-Thon event which starts on Monday, March 4th. The Read-A-Thon is a great way for our scholars to continue to build their stamina and love for reading as well as help us to fundraise for our much-needed 2nd playground at Woodland (Coming summer of 2025.)
Lastly, March 25th -March 29th will be our Spring Break. School will resume on Monday, April 1st. I would like to wish you all a very joyful and rejuvenating week with your family.
Your Principal,
Terri Jackson
National African American Parent Involvement Day
The article below was written by Meg Gutzwiller and recently featured in 279Insider
Woodland Elementary School had nearly 30 special visitors on Feb. 12 as they hosted community members, parents and district staff to share experiences and advice with scholars on National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID).
The event began with a musical performance from the school’s fifth grade scholars, which featured several cultural pieces in celebration of NAAPID and Black History Month. Afterwards, speakers rotated through classrooms throughout the school day, sharing a book, explaining their career or life journey, and talking to students about what has inspired them in their lives. Principal Terri Jackson said the event aims to help students gain insight into the everyday lives of the adults in their community and how they impact the community.
Some of the special guests included Superintendent Dr. Kim Hiel, the district’s first African American superintendent; Jena Holliday, a local children’s book author and creator; Jessica Theis, a recruiter at Target Corp; two principals from other school districts; and several other Woodland parents and a variety of employees from Osseo Area Schools, including Roddy Russel, a Woodland ESP who shared his stories and lessons in life with the theme of perseverance and grit.

READATHON Time
The Woodland Readathon is off and running and we have an awesome start! We are already 46% to our fundraising goal. This is an important fundraiser to pay for the IXL technology program that all students use. In addition the PTO has pledged $60,000 towards a second playground slated for installation in the summer of 2025.
This year the big prizes are in-class experiences for the TOP 3 Fundraising and TOP 3 Reading classrooms. The experiences include: author visit plus books for students, kite making kits, Creature Features and The Amazing Norm. If we reach our reading/fundraising goal all students will get extra recess and enjoy a freezie! The Readathon runs through March 17th- Thank you for your support!
