What's the DBQ Project?
Why DBQ?
- For years, the DBQ Project has been designing high-quality content literacy lessons for Social Studies and English language arts.
- The DBQ Project's 6-Step Method emphasizes skills in reading, thinking, speaking, and writing.
- All of our lessons are inquiry-based and student-centered.
- Our lessons, taught with our recommended instructional strategies, are high-interest and engaging.
- Addresses the current shifts in state and national assessments. Curious? Watch this quick video to learn from Dr. Laura Bacon and Sabrina Buggs about what happened in Aiken County. Did you say scores increased 9.6%? In secondary? Yes. That happened.

The DBQ Project Method
The DBQ Project 6-Step Method underpins the design of all our lessons. Each step builds on students’ curiosity and increases motivation and confidence to answer a compelling and authentic question. Lessons are written in multiple versions keeping age and scaffolding needs in mind.
The DBQ Project Materials
Our DBQs and Mini-Qs are concise study units. Districts widely implement The DBQ Project units across grades to enhance reading and writing skills in social studies. As students advance, they face increasingly intricate tasks. All materials are accessible in both print and on our online platform, DBQ Online.
DBQ’s in Social Studies – The DBQ Project started as a social studies program. We offer a wide variety of social studies specific binders including: American History, World History, Civics, Geography, Economics, and State Histories. Click Here to download our free sample unit “What Caused the Dust Bowl?
DBQ in Literature – DBQs in Literature? Yes, indeed! Our Literature units follow the familiar six-step method used in social studies but explore themes in literature. Units encompass various topics, including: “How Does The Great Gatsby Reflect America in the Twenties?” and “Romeo and Juliet: Who’s to Blame?” Click Here to download our free full sample unit “Of Mice and Men: How Does Steinbeck Use Foreshadowing?"
DBQ’s in Elementary – Building these reading, writing, speaking and listening, and historical thinking skills are essential at the foundational level. For that reason we created our two volumes of Elementary Mini-Q’s binders. Click Here to download our free full sample unit: “How Do We Remember 9/11?"
DBQ’s in Spanish – Our newest addition to our library is our Spanish binders. Click Here for more information on our information on our Spanish Binders or to download a sample unit.
