Superintendent Update
Dear Nashoba Community,
Three years ago, the Nashoba Regional School Committee (NRSC) created a Diversity, Equity, Awareness, and Racial Justice Advisory (DEARJ). The purpose of this advisory is to continually support and educate the Nashoba Regional School Committee in its work to ensure that Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging are embedded and practiced within our school district for all stakeholders.
If any resident of the Nashoba community is interested in being appointed to serve on this advisory for the next school year, they should submit a letter of intent to our School Committee Chairperson, Leah Vivirito, by Wednesday May 29th at lvivirito@nrsd.net.
If you would like to learn more about the work of DEARJ, share ideas, or participate in a one-time or project-based way, please reach out to dearj@nrsd.net or Leah Vivirito at lvivirito@nrsd.net. DEARJ and NRSC welcome your participation!
Peace,
Kirk Downing

Update: 9-12 Science Curriculum Review and Phase 1 Progress
As shared in previous updates, Nashoba is currently in Phase 1 of our 9-12 science curriculum review cycle. With Phase 1 recently concluded, we would like to provide our families with an update. The work of Phase 1 has been driven by two key questions: What is our instructional vision for 9-12 science, and how well do our current teaching methods, curricula, and materials support student learning and this vision?
The work of Phase 1 has included:
- The development of an instructional vision, identification of key priorities, and recognition of needs
- The gathering of data to assess current state
- An evaluation of the role of instructional technology in enhancing student learning
- Consideration of the need for new core curriculum materials to support effective, aligned instruction
Nashoba's newly developed instructional vision for high school science was based on the MA Curriculum Frameworks for Science/Technology/Engineering, the Portrait of a Nashoba Graduate, and current school goals. Feedback was gathered from 591 students and 125 families through surveys and the Thought Exchange. This feedback, along with thoughtful comments and recommendations from students, helped align the instructional vision with data. The development of an instructional vision sets the stage for reflecting on our current practices in light of this vision and sets the stage for Phase 2 which will begin next fall.
As we move into Phase 2, the following steps will include:
- Reviewing science elective offerings and course sequencing
- Identifying priority areas and disciplinary core content areas on which to focus first (e.g., specific courses)
- Engaging in site visits to other high-performing high schools and Nashoba's middle schools to ensure vertical alignment
- Exploring high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) that support inquiry-based, real-world, and hands-on learning in identified priority areas
- Using NRSD's Curriculum Selection Review Criteria to evaluate potential high-quality instructional materials
- Developing recommendations for new instructional materials and resources to support our instructional vision
- Strengthening communication about course sequencing, offerings, and overall science experience and goals with students and families
We thank the high school department, Department Head Linda Peer, and Curriculum Director Kandice McBrearty for all of their efforts to date with the curriculum review process as we work to further strengthen our programming on behalf of our students. We will continue to keep our families updated as our work progresses.
