Newsletter: Now Available in 100+ Languages
If you prefer to read the newsletter in a language other than English, please scroll to the bottom of this newsletter to select your preferred language. Simply select the "Translate" button on the lower right, select your language from the drop-down menu, and click "Close." The entire newsletter will then be translated into the language you have selected. Over 100 languages are available for selection.

We are trying a new way to communicate our newsletter to all of our families. Our intention is to make it more accessible for families to get updates on our Leeds news! We will no longer be sending home a paper copy of the newsletter. It will be emailed to all of our families as well as posted on our Leeds Elementary Facebook Page. The link to the lunch menu will also be included in the electronic newsletter, but we will still be sending home a paper copy of just the lunch menu for the remainder of this school year. If you do not have a current email address in our Infinite Campus student portal please log in and update with your current email. If you need help in doing so, please call our office at 712- 239-7034. For those of you who would still like a paper copy we will have paper copies available. You just need to stop by our main office and pick one up!

Artsonia!
Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade will be using Artsonia in art class. Artsonia is a free online art gallery. When a student finishes an artwork, they will take a picture of it and it will go to the Artsonia website. This is a free way to save your child’s artwork digitally. Each 3rd,4th, and 5th grader will be given a note with their own screen name to log onto Artsonia. Parents must give permission to allow the student to see the artwork on Artsonia. Parents need to go to the site on the note and register an email. You can also invite other family members to see the artwork on the site. Students can even purchase items with their artwork on them such as magnets or t-shirts. Artsonia is new to Leeds and if the older students learn to upload their artwork and use the site, we hope to add the lower grades this spring or next year.

Winter Weather Information
With cold weather upon us, it’s important to plan for inclement weather. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the colder weather. Suggested apparel includes a warm coat, hat, scarf and gloves. If a student needs access to these cold weather apparel items, please contact the school office.
Even during the winter season, the District allows recess and outdoor activities to continue as usual. However, if a student does not have appropriate winter clothing, a school official may ask a student to remain inside.
When the atmosphere reaches a temperature that feels like 15 degrees or less, then all students are kept inside for recess/activities. The “feel” of the temperature is determined based on the National Weather Service’s report.

School Closure Information
The winter in Iowa provides us with some days that make it a challenge to hold classes at the regular time, and sometimes we must close our schools early, late, or for the entire day. As you know, our weather is not only challenging at times, it is constantly changing.
Please remember that parents and guardians have the right to make the decision to keep their child home on any day that they feel it is unsafe for their student to be in school because of weather conditions. If you believe the weather provides a sincere reason why you may have to keep your students at home, or take your student home when classes are scheduled to continue, you as a parent or guardian will simply need to contact your child’s school to let them know.
If a decision is made on the day of school to cancel classes or to have a late start, a call goes out at 6:00 AM to all parents and guardians. Parents can also check the following sites for closure information.

If the schools are dismissed early or if school is called off entirely, there will be no evening activities. If you have before and after school care, please check with your provider about their procedures.

Communication and Preparedness
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
