South Grove Intermediate School
News and Notes for September
From Mrs. Reid
Thank you to all of our families that came for Family Fun Night! We hope that you were able to enjoy educational activities with your student. Congratulations to the raffle basket winners and thanks to all that bought tickets.
We had our first PTO meeting on Tuesday, September 6th. Thank you to all who attended! PTO meetings are typically on the first Monday of the month at 6:00 and childcare is provided. PTO meetings are a time to learn about what is going on around South Grove and to help plan activities for the students and staff. The mission of the South Grove PTO is to support the school staff in order to do what is best for our students. Come be a part of this group! We get business done with a few laughs along the way! If you are unable to join us, we send out the meeting notes via email. If you are unable to attend but would like to read the meeting notes, please check in with Chrystal Hammer at chammer@bgcs.k12.in.us.

Sixth Grade Chromebooks
Does my student have to take the device home each night?
Yes. Teachers have explained their expectations regarding homework and skills practice to the students. The Chromebook is the tool used to help give students access to teacher approved resources to develop skills.
Can my student play games and watch videos on the Chromebook when it is at home?
Yes, they can. You determine if they should. The device is filtered, but not all content can be blocked. Parents need to determine the rules for the device once it is in the home. Mrs. Collinsworth has explained to all students that when the device is in the classroom the teacher determines the purpose for being on the Chromebook. When the device goes home each night, the parent determines the purpose for being on the Chromebook. If a parent does not want the student to use the Chromebook, the parent has the right to take the Chromebook away from the student. Make sure the device is charged each evening.
Why does the device go home if my student doesn't have homework?
Having their Chromebooks at home allows the students to revisit lessons and concepts taught in class. The Chromebook allows students to access Canvas pages with links to websites for skills practice. Many teachers incorporate "Genius Hour" or "Twenty Time" which allow students to research and create something of their choosing during a set period of time at school. Taking the device home allows the students to be in charge of his/her learning, independent reading, and developing digital skills. Parents can determine if the device is used once homework is complete.
How much does it cost if my student damages the device or loses the charger?
BGCS has an insurance policy on all student Chromebooks. The first time there is damage, even if it is accidental, the fee is $25. The second time is $100, and the third time is $150. Lost chargers cost $30. This information was shared in the registration paperwork. Lost or stolen devices cost $150. Bills are mailed home.
How do I check to see what my student is doing on the Chromebook at school or when it is at home?
Please contact Mrs. Collinsworth (ecollinsworth@bgcs.k12.in.us) if you would like a copy of the sites your student accesses. We use a monitoring program called Go Guardian to track student use. She is happy to send home a copy of the sites visited. Students are aware that if they intentionally disable this software they are in violation of the AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) and may face disciplinary action.
The Chromebook's purpose is to provide a tool for learning.
Attached is the AUP and Internet Safety presentation shared with students.

South Grove continues our PBIS program - Positive Behavior Intervention and Support. Students are earning daily points for meeting classroom and school expectations for good behavior and citizenship. As a school, we've earned 107, 500 points.... WOW! To celebrate our points and hard work, each student will receive a frozen Ice Pop at lunch. Parents, please ask your child how many points they have and if they're saving their points for a big prize, or redeeming their points in the classroom. Students are given the opportunity to redeem their points every otherFriday for prizes ranging from a piece of candy to a larger prize like pizza party with 3 friends!
Mrs. Reid and I would like all parents to remind their child of basic behaviors that they should display while eating around others. We are finding that our cafeteria behaviors are needing some improvement. We encourage students to use a voice level of '1' in the cafe, to clean up after themselves everyday and to always be kind to others. Thank you!
