Big Spring High School News

Many students have gotten together to form a group dedicated to helping Cypress Springs. As a school, we have worked together accomplishing various areas of support. Dawg Pound has created a t-shirt that was sold with 100% of the proceeds going to Cypress Springs.

The second year Business INCubator class has been working hard to start off the year. Their business, Red, White, and You, is a t-shirt business that benefits our Military troops. They were selling their one of a kind t-shirts for $25. The shirt can come in red, white, grey, or navy! 10% of the proceeds goes to Operation Gratitude which is an organization that sends care packages to our military men and women. On October 3rd, we had two visitors teaching our students more about music. Dr. Alviani from Kutztown University met with our choral students. He is a qualified choral and vocal instructor. He gave the choir students a different perspective on the music that they have been working on. He also helped the male choral students with their vocal ranges.

Ms. Rebecca McLaughlin visited our Concert Band on October 3rd as well. She was representing the US Marine Corps President's Own Band. This is one of the top bands of the country, if not the world.

This was a great learning experience for our music students!

• On October 2, 2017, students attended the Fall Leadership Conference at the Blair County Convention Center. The 5 Big Spring FFA Officers that attended learned more about their positions. The freshman that attended learned about leadership and FFA knowledge.

• On October 6, 2017, FFA attended the KILE Stockman's Contest at the Farm Show Complex. There were 27 Big Spring FFA students in attendance. The students had the opportunity to judge 5 classes of livestock, wool, and meat as well as take 7 other identification and knowledge quizzes. Overall, our FFA had teams place 21st and 29th out of 71 teams and they also earned 8th place in the category of Management. Individually, Emily Lindsay placed 5th, Cory Latchford placed 7th, and Taylor Donovan placed 10th all in the Livestock category.

• FFA also headed to Ohio from October 16 - 20 for Congress. The Horse Evaluation Team was given the opportunity to compete in the All American Quarter Horse Congress Judging Contest to prepare them for National Convention. Emily Lindsay, Allyson Shively, and Tucker Williams all attended.

• From October 24- 28, 2017, 21 FFA students will be traveling to Indianapolis, Indiana for National Convention. We have two student groups competing at National Convention. The Horse Evaluation Team made up of Makayla Hoch, Alexis Fearnbaugh, Tucker Williams, and Allyson Shively will be competing as well as the Ag Communications Team made up of Olivia Monismith, Taylor Donovan, Cory Latchford, and Becky Webster. The other students attending look forward to participating in the events.

This fall, Club C.A.R.E., will be hosting a fundraiser that they have never done before. This fundraiser has the goal of involving as many teachers as possible. On Tuesday, October 31, teachers are encouraged to wear their most creative, most outrageous, most popular, school appropriate Halloween Costume to school. The teachers have the option of choosing a single costume or a group. A group of students will take a picture of the teachers dressed up and put them on cans at lunch for students to vote on their favorite. The teacher with the most votes will win a prize and the pride of being the coolest teacher.

On October 4, 2017, junior students in the Career Project Seminar course had their mock trials. Prior to the mock trial, all students are required to do a job shadow in a field they have interest in. Then, during the mock trial, they are paired with an adult with experience or knowledge of the area. The interviewees are asked a series of mixed up questions that they are to be prepared for. This is a great real-life experience and counts for a large portion of the class grade.

Both English and Social Studies classes have the opportunity to take a field trip to Washington DC on October 30, 2017. This trip will include visiting Arlington National Cemetery, attending the Tomb of the Unknowns and laying a wreath there, and the option of visiting the Holocaust Museum or taking a trip to the Capitol building. This is an exciting field trip to go out and see our country's capital!

As many senior students' high school fall sports careers are coming to an end, their accomplishments are being acknowledged through senior night.

On October 4th and 5th, Drivers Ed students participated in a mock traffic stop. The students experienced the traffic stop from the driver's perspective as well as from a bystander position. Our school Resource Officer, Deputy Grzyboski, conducted the mock stop. He went through the entire process including lights and sirens. The students had a paper where they could write down their observations. The most beneficial part of this mock stop was the students now know what to do and what not to do if they're ever in this situation. Mr. Artz and Mr. Engleman, drivers ed teachers, plan on having another real life example in the future. Officer Grzyzboski will be showing students how to tell if tinted windows are illegal or not.

Recently, the Honors English II classes, taught by Ms. Rebecca Whigham and Ms. Bethany Pagze, studied a mini-unit on the Carlisle Indian School while learning about the Holocaust. So far, these classes have had two visitors, Barbara Landis from the Cumberland County Historical Society and Matt Barcaro from WGAL 8. Barbara Landis is a record keeper of all the archives for the Carlisle Indian School. While she was visiting, she shared with our students information on the Indian School but most interestingly, she shared the tallies of families in Newvile who hosted Indian Students in their homes. Matt Barcaro presented information on the documentary of the Araphoe Tribe's exhumation of their students from the cemetery on the Carlisle Barracks. The students enjoyed hearing his experience and what creating the series meant to him. Hearing from these speakers allowed the students to have an experience outside of Newville. It taught them the process to produce a piece of journalism as well as understanding how the Carlisle Indian School has had an effect on native cultures in not only America but the whole world.

Big Spring is hosting a 'Fill the Truck' drive to collect donations for the school we co-adopted, Cypress Springs. Cypress Springs High School is located in Texas and the region was severely damaged by Hurricane Harvey.

On October 27, 2017 at the Bulldog Stadium from 4:30-8:15 donations will be collected to send to Cypress Springs. Donations will also be collected on October 28, 2017 at the Newville Dollar General parking lot from 10am-2pm.
