A Message To Families From Mr. Peck
Riverview Families,
What an amazing school year it has been! I have said it over and over, that Riverview is a special place because of the people that make up our school community: the teachers, the staff, the families, and especially the students. I'm so grateful to be a part of this community.
We sure had some memorable events this year. Family Fun Night; the Fun Run; Family Movie Night; African Drumming; the science fair; Grand Day; the Balloons Over Riverview parade; the learner showcase; the MYRA challenge; Student of the Month celebrations; band concerts, dress up days, field trips, author visits, nature walks, buddy classrooms, and so much more! Every time we did one of these things, our focus was on our students, their learning, and making sure they had a positive and joyful school experience. Thank you to all of you and to our incredible staff at Riverview for the time, effort, and skill that was put into each of these experiences. Ultimately it was our learners that benefited.
And speaking of learning... our students did A LOT of it this year. Spring assessments are only one way to measure learning, but when we look at the results we see some amazing growth from our learners. We invested deeply in our literacy instruction and resources this school year and the result was a significant increase in scores from last fall. At the start of the year, we set an ambitious goal that the percentage of learners who are meeting grade level standards on the spring Fastbridge aReading assessment would increase by 4% when compared to last spring. After wrapping up our spring assessments last week and compiling the data, we learned that we blew our goal out of the water. We actually saw an increase of 9% in proficiency from last spring to today! I know I shared this news in last's week's Riverview Reader, but I am so excited about it I just needed to share it again! We continue to be amazed at what our learners are capable of!
I feel incredibly proud of our students. I feel grateful for our teachers and staff. And I feel blessed to receive the support we do from so many Riverview families. I'm already looking forward to next year, hearing from our students about their summer vacations, and continuing to build on the terrific success we had this school year.
Best wishes for a safe, healthy, refreshing, and fun summer vacation! Don't forget to read!
Shawn Peck
Principal

REMINDER - The Last Day of School (Tuesday, June 3) Is An Early Release Day
The last day of school, Tuesday, June 3, is an early release day for all elementary schools in our district. We will be dismissing our students at 11:00. Whether your child rides the bus or gets picked up at school, please plan ahead to make sure everyone gets home safely on that last day.
Be Sure To Return All Library Books and Other Materials Borrowed From School
With the school year winding down, please take a moment to collect any overdue library books and/or other materials that have been borrowed from the school and return them as soon as possible. We appreciate your assistance with making sure these materials will be usable for other students in the future.
Please Plan Ahead For Medication Pick Ups In The Health Office
If you have medication and/or supplies for your learner in the Health Office, please read the following message carefully:
- The only medication that we can send home directly with learners are inhalers.
- Our last day of school is Tuesday, June 3. Please note that we do not want any rescue medications (ex. epi-pens, inhalers, seizure meds, etc.) picked up before the end of the school year.
- June 3rd is the last day of school and an early release (students will be dismissed at 11:00). After 11:00, parents/guardians are invited to stop in and pick up medications. This would be ALL medications, daily and rescue. The nurses will be in the health office until 2:00 PM on Tuesday, June 3.
- On Wednesday, June 4th the building will be open and main office staff will help with locating medications in the Health Office. The building hours will be 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Parents/guardians are welcome to stop by the school at any time on that day to pick up any medications.
- If medications are not picked up by June 4th they will be disposed of as we cannot store them for the summer months.
- If you child will be in a summer program you will need to pick up the medication and bring it to that location for the summer program. We cannot transport them for them.
Avoid the "Summer Slide"! Keep Your Child Reading & Learning Over the Summer
FROM THE SCHOLASTIC KIDS & FAMILY READING REPORT: THE SUMMER READING IMPERATIVE" (click link to read whole article)
"At first glance, parents seem aware of the importance of summer reading, as 94% agree reading over the summer can help their child during the school year. And yet, nearly half of parents with school-age children are unaware of the “summer slide” (47%), the loss of academic skills that occurs when school is not in session and which is attributed largely to the lack of reading. This is of critical importance as the effects of the summer slide are cumulative. Researchers estimate that by the time a struggling reader reaches middle school, summer reading loss has accumulated to a two-year lag in reading achievement."
It is so important that you keep your child reading over the summer so they can continue to practice the skills they learned throughout the school year. If they don't, research says that they will "slide" backwards and lose progress by the time fall rolls around. So - be sure to stock up on books any way you can! Read AT LEAST 20 minutes per day (although getting lost in a book for hours during a long summer day is just fine too!). We are so fortunate to be connected to a wonderful public library system in Dakota County. There are "free little libraries" scattered around our community. Barnes & Noble has a fun summer reading program that allows kids to pick out free books if they show they are reading over the summer. And if you are having a hard time finding books for your kids to choose over the summer months, call the school. We can help!

Our Lost & Found Continues To Grow; See Anything That Looks Familiar?
The lost & found at RVES continues to grow each day. Please encourage your child to look at the table set up in the main lobby to look for anything that might belong to them. The table will also be set up during the learner showcase that will take place this week. We are hoping as many items as possible can find their way back to their owners. If there are still items remaining after the last day of school, they will be donated to those in need.
