Northwood Elementary Arrival and Drop-Off
School hours 9:10-3:10 (Doors open at 8:55 for students)
If your child is a car rider, please adhere to the parking lot traffic pattern. Traffic is one way all around the building. You cannot make a left turn into the school parking lot from Abbe Rd. You may turn left on Hilliard from Abbe Rd., right on Rosealee and then right into the back lot of the school. You must go left and all the way around the building to drop off/pick up your child at the front doors of the elementary school.
Important message about Classroom treats and Parties
We have students who have allergies (some severe) that may develop a reaction, as a result of certain foods being permitted and passed out during special occasions such as birthdays, classroom parties, rewards, etc. This is something the kids love and should be able to enjoy.
However, to keep all students safe, It's imperative that all foods brought from the outside are store bought (not homemade) and have nutrition information on them to check ingredients. If the ingredients aren't available, they may not be distributed.
We have students with all kinds of allergies (peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, dairy, wheat, gluten, etc.). We also have students with medical conditions who can't eat certain foods as well.
Ideally parents should notify the school/teacher at least 24 hours prior to when they bring in treats so that the teacher can check for allergies.
Non-food treats are encouraged, such as stickers, pencils, glow sticks, bracelets and other kid-friendly items.
Attendance
Did you know...? Why Daily Attendance Matters:
Missed Lessons = Falling Behind: Even one day can mean missing critical instructions and activities, making it harder for your child to catch up.
Impact on Future Success: Consistent attendance is a strong predictor of academic achievement and future opportunities.
Building Resilience: Regular attendance teaches your child the value of perseverance and responsibility—essential skills for success in life.
Stronger Friendships: Daily presence helps your child develop and sustain friendships, which are crucial for emotional and social development.
Healthy Routine: Attending school every day establishes a stable routine, promoting better mental and physical health.
*When your child is absent make sure that you contact the elementary office. We need your help to ensure that we are providing your child with the best possible education. So please bring them to school every day and on time.
*Please make sure that you are planning your family vacations around the school calendar. It is imperative that your child attends school every day. The only way our students will continue to excel academically is by being active participants in the classroom and they can only do so if they are here at school.
PBIS: Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports
You may have heard the term PBIS and wondered what that means in Elyria City Schools. PBIS stands for positive behavioral interventions and supports. This is a framework we use to support positive behaviors in students. We break this down in what we call tiers. The best way to imagine this is stacked scoops of ice cream.
Tier 1: This is like our ice cream cone. Without the cone there is nowhere to stack your scoops of ice cream. These are the classroom management and building wide strategies we use to support behavior. Examples include PAX, school-wide expectations, access to earned incentives etc. ALL students receive these supports.
Tier 2: This is your first scoop of ice cream. This sits right on top of the cone. Not every student needs these supports, but those who do MUST have the cone, or tier 1 supports, in place first. This may look like a check-in-check out with a teacher, a daily behavior chart or work in social skills groups. Some kids need these supports but not all and that is OK, everyone needs something different.
Tier 3: This is the final scoop of ice cream. Here students must already have a tier 1 and tier 2 in place for it to be useful. This looks different depending on the student and is a personalized plan to support behavior. This is the smallest proportion of students in our tiered supports.
All these supports are layered to ensure we support students in the most effective way possible.
