MS/HS Cardinal Update
January 20 - Student/Parent Edition
First Five for 2nd Semester
Dear Parents,
Here are a few notes and reminders as we start 2nd Semester on January 27!
- 2nd Semester classes begin on Monday, January 27. Mrs. Moore has finalized 2nd semester schedules with all high school students. If you have any questions, check in with your student or contact Mrs. Moore.
- Future inclement weather days will result in Virtual/At Home Learning Days. This will look different in past years due to Middle School students not taking chromebooks home. Mr. Becker will send out an update regarding this next week.
- Our Juniors have started ACT Prep for our State Wide ACT Test in March. All Juniors have access to OnToCollege ACT Prep Resources linked here
- Habit of Mind Focus - January - Habit of Mind Focus - Remaining Open to Continuous Learning

- How do we work on this habit in class?
- Build in times for students to reflect on their work/learning
- Consistently ask the questions -
- Why is this important?
- Did our discussion/activity etc. change your perspective or learning about this topic? How so?
- Partner work - Peer Tutoring/Peer Review of work
- Demonstrate your own willingness to continuously learn
- Try new classroom strategies
- Talk to students about your own interests and learning
- For more information on Remaining Open to Continuous Learning - Check out this link
- Community Service Hours - High school students need to accumulate 40 community service hours over the course of their 4 years of high school. Parent Corner - Recovery Room
What is the Recovery Room? Essentially, the recovery room is a space where students can go when they are having difficulty focusing in class. They do not work on any assignments, but focus on getting themselves to a place mentally where they can learn. Before they go back to class, the check-in with office staff to make sure they are ready to go back to class.
How does a student get assigned to the recovery room? Teachers can assign students to the Recovery Room if they see they are having difficulties focusing during class. Students can also ask to go to the recovery room if they feel like they are struggling with attention to the current classwork or struggling with their own behaviors.
Are students "in trouble" when they go to the Recovery Room? Not at all. The recovery room is seen as an intervention to help students get themselves to a place mentally where they can focus and learn.
How is the Recovery Room helpful? The recovery room process helps students identify times during the day when they may struggle to focus in class, which in turn, could end up where they have an office referral for their behavior. The Recovery Room allows students to calm down and get themselves back in a mode for learning, and also offers some helpful council from school staff on strategies when they go back to class.
If you have more questions about the Recovery Room, please contact Mr. Becker, Mrs. Dillin, Mrs. Bulin, or Mrs. Moore from our Office Team. They will be happy to answer any questions you have1
