Understanding Chronic Absenteeism vs. Truancy
In this week’s edition of the Tiger Ambush newsletter, we’re clarifying two key terms: Chronic Absenteeism and Truancy, both of which impact student success.
Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 18 or more days in one academic year—equivalent to roughly 10% of the school year. This includes both excused and unexcused absences. Students who are chronically absent are at higher risk of falling behind academically and may struggle with graduation requirements.
Truancy focuses specifically on unexcused absences and is enforced by Alabama law. Under Alabama Code Section 16-28-12, a student is considered truant after five unexcused absences. Additional unexcused absences may result in interventions, and parents or guardians may be required to meet with school officials. After seven unexcused absences, schools are required to refer the case to juvenile court or social services.
It’s essential for families to communicate with the school about absences and provide any necessary documentation to avoid unexcused absences being counted as truancy.
Demopolis High School is committed to working with families to promote strong attendance habits and ensure all Tigers have the opportunity to thrive academically.
If you have questions or need support with attendance-related concerns, please contact our office. Let’s work together to support student success!
