Roller Nation Foundation Partners with Toys for Tots
The Roller Nation Foundation (RNF) submitted a request to Toys for Tots to get one item for each student in the district. SSgt Tony “Ace” Acevedo and other Marines helped load the truck, which was also donated, so the entire project was completed at zero cost to the school district. The district would like to thank the Roller Nation Foundation and Toys for Tots for making this happen, and we ask that others consider donating to both organizations to help our students and children in our area.
12 Days of Christmas
Staff and students in the elementary school are kicking off the holiday season with their annual "12 Days of Christmas" activities. The fun began on Thursday, December 7th with the 12 Days of Christmas spirit/theme days. In addition, from December 7-22, students will be called to pick out a Christmas gift from a variety of brand new toys/items. The goal is for every student in the building to receive a special gift by December 22, before we leave for the holiday break. Many thanks to the staff and leadership who bring these events to life every year. You can feel the excitement in the building!
NED Show Comes to Steelton-Highspire Elementary
On Thursday, December 14th students in grades K-6 will be attending NED Show assemblies. NED's Mindset Mission is a character education program that centers around three important messages that have lifelong relevance: Never give up, Encourage others and Do your best. During the assembly, students will learn about the importance of these three life skills while also enjoying storytelling, magic, humor and yo-yo tricks.
Partner Spotlight - Neighboring Academy
The Neighboring Academy breaks cycles of poverty by creating a pathway to homeownership that combines local neighborhood capital with 21st Century skills for Steelton-Highspire high school students. We think about "neighboring" as a verb and use a two-part definition: 1) how we relate interpersonally with those around us; 2) how systems and structures relate to each other to create neighborhoods.
Neighboring Academy program directors (Kevin & Dale) meet with Cohort I students (current 10th graders during the last two periods of the school day) M-F and with Cohort II students (current 9th graders during the two periods right before) to help students learn design thinking skills (see attached). Students are enrolled in workforce development and each have bank accounts where they can deposit their earnings and learn fiscal responsibility. They are given opportunities to apply design thinking skills in a variety of projects (like renovating a church on Pine Street, building sheds, designing a Neighboring Academy campus, etc.) as well as in different experiences (Visiting Washington DC, Harrisburg University, local petroleum manufacturing plants, etc.).
The Neighboring Academy invites all Steelton-Highspire 8th grade students to apply for a 6-week summer Neighboring Academy program before entering their 9th grade year. A cohort of about 10 rising 9th grade students are then selected based on their applications & interviews to complete the 6-week program to determine their fit and eligibility. Upon successful completion of the summer program, students are then invited to become Neighboring Academy candidates during their 9th grade year. At the completion of their 9th grade year, candidates in good standing are then invited to apply & interview to enter the Neighboring Academy. (Good standing relates to the "ABC's" - Attendance, Behavior, and Class Completion)
At the completion of each year in the Neighboring Academy, students in good standing are eligible to receive a scholarship to continue their education post high school.
We look forward to welcoming our next cohort of rising 9th graders this summer!
Senior Baby Pics Due December 15th
Calling all Class of 2024 Roller Families!
Seniors and Senior families who are interested in having their senior celebrated can send in a copy of their student’s baby picture for the yearbook this year. This an optional, but fun thing we want to include in the book this year. Pictures need to be scanned and emailed at PNG files to Ms. Thorne (TThorne@shsd.k12.pa.us) by December 15. Submissions after that date will not be able to be accepted.
If you want to provide a short (less than 25 word) shout out or message to your senior for their book, that will also need to be provided by 12/15
Thank you! –High School Yearbook Staff
5 Reasons you NEED to have Renter’s Insurance
Protection of your personal belongings
- It’s a good idea to take inventory of your belongings. If the worst happened, how would you replace the costly electronics you own—things like smartphones, smartwatches, laptops, tablets, TVs and gaming systems? What about the hundreds or thousands of dollars’ worth of shoes and clothes you have? And what’s your furniture worth—sofas, tables, chairs, beds, mattresses and recliners? All of these personal belongings, and more, can be covered by a renters insurance policy.
- What would you do if a visitor got hurt at your place, and you couldn’t cover their medical bills? What if that person sued you—how would you cover the court costs? Consider these possibilities, which could happen to any renter:
- Your dog bit someone’s child.
- You had some friends over for a party, and things got unruly.
- Someone tripped and fell inside your apartment.
- With a renter’s insurance policy, you can rest easy knowing you have coverage to protect yourself and your assets (up to the stated liability limit in your policy).
- Many tenants mistakenly believe their landlord’s insurance will protect them, but that’s just not the case. As the owner of your rental home or apartment building, the landlord has a form of homeowners insurance that covers the physical structure itself, but it doesn’t cover your belongings inside.
- If your rental home or apartment is damaged and uninhabitable while repairs are being made, most renters insurance policies include coverage for the additional expenses you’ll incur during that time. For example, if your monthly rent is $900, but you can’t live in your apartment for the next month while it’s being repaired, then your renters insurance policy would cover the additional living expenses beyond $900 that you incur while staying in a hotel, eating meals out, etc.
- Across the United States, premiums for renters insurance average between $15 and $30 per month, depending on the location and size of the rental unit and your possessions.
