Wildcat Weekly
News from Westfield Elementary: September 6, 2024
Westfield Principal Kristen Ulery
Westfield families:
It was great to see so many families at curriculum night this week. We appreciate the support we receive from families!
We are continuing our fall benchmark testing, including MAP, which will finish next week. Second and fourth graders will also be taking CoGAT in the coming weeks. All of these assessments are intended to provide teachers with valuable data to target instruction to meet the needs of all students. You will receive score reports from both MAP and CoGAT assessments once all of them have been completed. If you have questions about specifically when your child is testing, please reach out to their teacher as the schedule varies for each class.

BESS
Community Consolidated School District 89 is committed to helping all students grow academically while also developing life skills that will help them be successful adults. In order to better measure students’ ability to manage emotions and make good decisions, CCSD 89 students in third through eighth grades will be participating in the Behavioral and Emotional Screening System (commonly known as BESS) in September.
The BESS screener will take students less than 10 minutes to complete. Students are asked to indicate whether they never, sometimes, often, or always agree with 28 different statements. Examples of the statements include “I’m happy with who I am” and “I’m good at making decisions.” Students will take the BESS more than once this school year.
BESS is not a tool for making a diagnosis and there is no grade associated with it. BESS will give the school data about how your child internalizes risk, self regulates, and establishes good relationships. This data will be paired with in-class observations to help track student growth over time. If the BESS screener shows any immediate concern for your student’s emotional health, a social worker will reach out to you by phone and discuss ways to support you and your student.
Fourth grade orchestra try-out tomorrow
Fourth grade families: Reminder that if you signed up for orchestra this year, the Try Out Day is tomorrow, Saturday, at Glen Crest Middle School. The Orchestra teachers sent out the schedule earlier this week. If you did not receive it, please let them know as soon as possible!

Cell phones, smartwatches, and other electronic devices must be kept in a backpack, purse, or locker during the school day. If a student violates these rules, the device will be confiscated and there may be disciplinary action.
