Week of April 21, 2024
From the Desk of Our Proud Principal
Good evening, Trojan Families!
This is a message from your proud principal, Mrs. Kinard, and the school leaders at Ferndale Middle School. For additional important information for you and your students, please check out the digital version of this announcement, which can be found on our school website and social media.
We have exactly 25 days before our students will take their end-of-grade (EOG) tests and only 34 instructional days before the end of the school year. It is crucial that they are prepared and ready to do their best on these critical assessments. Please encourage them to ask for help and fully participate to get the most out of these last few weeks of the school year.
⭐Progress Reports will go home with students on Tuesday, April 23, 2024.
🎉Congratulations to our 8th-grade scholars on their high attendance for MAP testing last week! They celebrated with a pajama day on Friday, April 19.
🎉We also want to congratulate all our scholars who increased their MAP RIT score by 10 points or more! They will enjoy their Breakfast of Champions celebration this Wednesday, April 24!
🎉We will also be recognizing our honor roll students and students with perfect attendance for the third quarter this Thursday! We are very proud of all of our scholars!
GCS Summer Learning for Middle Schools
This year, summer learning will not be available for middle school students. As community organizations share programming options, we will work to inform families.
EOG Prep Academy
This week, our students will have the opportunity to participate in our EOG Prep Academy. Students will receive extra support in ELA, Math, Social-Emotional Learning, and 8th-Grade Science. There will be competitions and prizes for individual students, grade levels, and classes! We are excited to provide the EOG Prep Academy for the second year at FMS. This year will be bigger and better!
⭐Free High Speed Internet!
The Technology & Data Institute (TDI) is a public service consortium of public entities including GCS, City of Greensboro, City of High Point, Guilford County, NC A&T, and UNCG. In partnership with Lumos, TDI is piloting the program through June 2026 to bring free high-speed internet to students who reside in selected service areas in High Point and Greensboro. You must sign up for the free service at lumosfiber.com/TDIGuilford or call Lumos at 844-403-8182.
GCS Transportation
It’s that time of year again! The window for transportation registration opens on April 8. This year, the district is committed to making sure at least 90% of students who need transportation have it on the first day of school. During the 2023/2024 school year, more than 40,000 students applied for transportation services; however, only 29,000 used these services.
KEY INFORMATION
GCS will provide transportation services for eligible students to and from their assigned stop location. The district utilizes six modes of transportation. Factors used to determine which modes will be used include, but are not limited, to program location, student ridership, staff availability, etc.
The transportation window is open from April 8 – May 31.
Families are encouraged to register as soon as possible to ensure their student has transportation on the first day of school.
Families and data managers should only register students who plan to ride.
The Transportation Department will host on-site registration events May 13-18.
Late registration could mean your student does not have transportation on the first day.
You can register by visiting www.gcsnc.com/transportation
PBIS and Class Craft Update - Mr. Russell
As we stride through the final quarter of the academic year, we are excited to continue fostering a culture of excellence and positive behavior at our school. We believe that collaboration between home and school is crucial in nurturing the growth and development of our scholars, and we invite you to join us in this endeavor.
In our ongoing efforts to recognize and reward acts of Trojan PRIDE, teachers will continue issuing ClassCraft points to scholars who exemplify these qualities. These points serve as a currency for participation in various school-wide and classroom incentives, fostering a sense of achievement and motivation among our students.
Moreover, we extend an invitation for you to join ClassCraft if you haven't already done so. By becoming a part of this platform, you can actively participate in acknowledging and rewarding your student's demonstrations of PRIDE, both within and outside of the school environment. Additionally, ClassCraft provides you with the opportunity to monitor your child's behavior, ensuring alignment with our shared values.
To assist you in getting started with ClassCraft, we have prepared a brief instructional video that outlines the process. You can access the videos by clicking on the links below at your convenience.
Thank you for your continued support,
April PBIS Incentive

Math Curriculum
Hello Ferndale Family.
All Math Teachers will begin teaching content from Unit 7 from Open Up, the GCS district supported Math Curriculum.
Please click on the link below if you are interested in exploring the content.
https://access.openupresources.org/curricula/our6-8math
Please find below material taught by each teacher for each grade:
6th Grade Math, taught by Ms. Spears, will continue to teach about Rational Number. In this unit, students are introduced to signed numbers and plot points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane for the first time. They work with simple inequalities in one variable and learn to understand and use "common factor," "greatest common factor." and "least common multiple."
7th Grade Math, taught by Ms. Sherrod and Ms. Rudesill will continue teaching about Angles, Triangles, and Prisms. In this unit, students investigate whether sets of angle and side length measurement determine unique triangles or multiple triangles, or fail to determine triangles. Students also study and apply angle relationships, learning to understand and use the terms "complementary," "supplementary," "vertical angles," and "unique."
8th Grade Math, taught by Ms. Clarke-Huie, Ms. Nelson, and Mr. Lee will continue teaching about Exponents and Scientific Notation. This unit begins reviewing exponential expressions, including work with exponential expressions with bases 2 and 1/2. The next section reviews powers of 10 as a prelude to the introduction to Scientific Notation.
Math 1, taught by Ms. Clarke-Huie, will continue teaching about Structures of Expressions interpreting and analyzing functions.
Math 2, facilitated by Dr. Li, will continue teaching about Variation and Square Root Functions.
Thanks so much for your continued support.
With Mathematical Appreciation,
Dr. Cole

Stamina
As we inch closer and closer to our End of Grade ELA testing, there is one thing that will help every student be more successful. Stamina. Our students need additional practice building their sustained reading practice. By having your child read a grade level text for fifteen minutes without interruption- every day until testing- you will have enhanced his or hers ability in various areas. These include them having the ability to complete their assessment on time, not become easily fatigued while reading, increase vocabulary and overall comprehension. You can start small with just five minutes and increase it incrementally. This skill- stamina building- is an academic and life skill that all students need to have. Help us, help them build the stamina we all know is required to run this academic race with endurance and success!
Your Partner in Literacy,
Mrs. Mcleod 📕📖💡
